Saturday 30 June 2012 -Maiestas * Spectral Manifest * Brimwylf

It was the year 1991, and, looking to form a band, Dave ward went to a local underground record store in Dallas, Texas to look at ads placed by others also searching for band members. The one that caught his eye was placed by drummer mike Rangel and guitarist joseph Herrera. Dave called mike, loaded his marshal half-stack and ironbird battle axe, and went to meet him.

It was a meeting of war-brothers who had grown up listening to the same bands (possessed, bathory, venom, kreator, mercyful fate, celtic frost, hellhammer, sabbat, destruction, and dark angel), and spent their early years skipping school, drinking beer, running speed, and smoking dope.
A few years went by, and they became involved with other bands and projects (magus, bael, and absu). Dave, realizing he was getting sidetracked, broke ties with other bands in 1994, and focused on what he had set out to do from the beginning: play and write music that would be a soundtrack for the violent thoughts within his mind.

Reclusive once more, mike and Dave played constantly for the years to come.
Now the year is 2001, and they have brought on war brothers jay eimandoust and Dave Vaughan to complete the rhythm section.

Through the years of playing together, they never had a name for the band. Thinking seriously of a way to describe how they feel about music, maiestas has risen. They are masters of their own creation, fall to none, and promote vehemence, wrath, hate, anger, and destruction of all mankind.

We are very much into black metal, thrash metal and death metal. Maiestas prides its self on old school riffs maintaining an extreme sound with heavy black metal and thrash metal influences. We try not to sound like any other bands or genres we just wanna be as heavy and extreme as we can.

Maiestas then reformed in the winter of 2010 with addition hellblaster on bass. Jj returned as second guitar player, d ward stayed as main guitar and vocals, and of course bael occultus maintained his drumming post. Thus here we are in 2011 ready to destroy anything in our path. So come join our path of destruction.

Spectral Manifest (Houston, TX)

SPECTRAL MANIFEST are intent on raping the ears of the unwilling and molesting the ears of the devoted. On January 11th, 2009, the 3 track rehearsal demo EP In Shadows Unseen was released and Wraith Metal was born. It has already garnered reviews in several underground metal zines and now the band has released their April 20th, 2009 performance in the form of a DVD entitled Wraith Insurrection: Live @ Sound Exchange.

On June 29th 2010, Wraith Horde Assault was released. Featuring 5 tracks captured live from the soundboard at Walter’s on Washington here in Houston, TX, this release sees the duo going full throttle with their brand of what is dubbed as wraith metal.

SPECTRAL MANIFEST have opened for old school legends like Texas death metal lords IMPRECATION, as well as new school thrash acts like VEKTOR and EXMORTUS.

In the summer of 2011, SPECTRAL MANIFEST announced the addition of bassist Ulfr Thorvaldson (ex-EPIC DEATH) to their ranks. Since that time, they have been holed up in their rehearsal studio working on material for their as yet untitled full length release as well as making an appearance at the first Building Temples From Death Fest held in Houston, TX and the second annual Gathering of Bestial Vengeance Fest in Dallas, TX.

Brimwylf (Houston, TX)
https://brimwylf.bandcamp.com/

Black metal has been sorely underrepresented in [Houston] and I think in many ways that has contributed to the stagnation of the local scene as a whole.

The guys in the recently formed Brimwylf however aim to remedy this deficit in the Houston metal scene by firing out blasts of grim Norwegian inspired black metal. Formed in the summer of 2011, Brimwylf have made some amazingly rapid strides towards making themselves known not only in Houston, but in the newly stirring American black metal scene in general through the upcoming release of their debut EP. The Metal Pigeon has had the opportunity to get a sneak preview, and be relieved! There are no shoegaze influences, hipster tendencies, nor nonsense spewing ideologies or manifestos to be found here; just raw, aggressive, razor sharp, relentless black metal fury. And they’re only getting started. - . The Metal Pigeon

Friday 29 June 2012 - Soup * Only Beast * Journey Agents

Soup (Austin, TX)
https://www.thesouphouse.net/

SOUP has been moving feet since 2006 when two musicians with like-minded tastes began playing local bars and clubs in the East Texas area. Between Colt Pope’s sweet, crooner voice and Anthony Parrotta’s rhythmic bass a new sound began to form. After developing a devoted following, the pair decided to move away from a two man gig and start a full band. Anthony knew just the right men for the job. S…imon Page grew up in Ft. Worth with Anthony and began tearing up the guitar at the age of 16; Josh Bickley played drums alongside Simon in the alt/rock band Lean. The ripping sound of the guitar and the driving beat of the drums mixed with the already mellow sounds of the bass creating the perfect back drop for the painfully soulful wail of the vocals. In 2008 SOUP had their debut show and live recording at Banita Creek Saloon in Nachogdoches, Tx. Feeling the pressures of small town life versus big life dreams, all of the members felt it was time to relocate to a bigger stage. Centered in Austin, SOUP has been building a following around Texas for half a decade. Having a essence of “soulful, blues-rock” with taste of grunge, SOUP believes there is no sound like the live sound, and they are guaranteed to entertain an audience of any age.

Journey Agents (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Journey-Agents/168448393904

The Journey Agents (commonly referred to as the J.A.’s) are a Houston-based, six member funk ensemble. The music, simply and conveniently classified as funk, is all original (barring the occasional Curtis Mayfield or Lonnie Liston Smith jam) and often explores other territories as well. Latin, percussion-heavy samba rhythms, textures of jazz, and energy of rock are elements that can also be found in the grease bucket. Cosmic, spacy vibes, yet earth-rooted and tightly arranged movements, are designed to be crowd-centric. A phased out Rhodes piano is a common centerpiece, and is punctuated by the warm tube glow, mid 70’s virtuosity and analogue know-how of the players (whose collective name was modeled after a piece by Rashaan Roland Kirk.) The band’s shared passion for the likes of the Isley Brothers and Roy Ayers is a clear central influential force. The lyrical content often revolves around such politically charged, spiritually aware themes as fried chicken and Cadillacs – subjects many musicians and global leaders are afraid to touch. But the JA’s be puttin’ it in yo earhole anyhow.

Friday 22 June 2012 - Poor Dumb Bastards * Project Grimm * Luxurata

Poor Dumb Bastards (Houston, TX)

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Poor-Dumb-Bastards/126350582202

PDB was formed in March 1991 by long time hetero life partners and musical collaborators, Mike Porterfield and Byron Dean. The initial interest was to find a means to get into Emo’s for free, later they discovered Emo’s was always free. Drawing on their collective influences and experiences from some of their earlier work, bands like Cretinoid, Plutonium Flatheads and the Byron Weird Group, Mike and Byron set out create a genre all their own, hence “Texas Drunk Rock” was born. Add the non bass playing talents of Steve Scholtes and the competent, metronomic drumming of Chi Chi Macoola, and PDB were able to carve their initials on the bathroom door of the Texas music scene. Through the many years and many lineup changes, but these Ill-minded sewer rockers have stayed true to their founding principals. POWER, PERFORMANCE, PERVERSION

Project Grimm (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Project-Grimm/121509194528707

A decidedly less experimental group than its most direct predecessor, the Mike Gunn, Project Grimm was formed in 1995 by Gunn frontman and guitarist John Cramer to satisfy his urges to be a bit more straightforward in his approach to guitar rock. Interested in looking to build a band around this new direction, Cramer called local drummer Rick Costello (…of Houston band Bleachbath) who volunteered his services straight away. Drew Calhoun joined on bass, and former Schlong Weasel (University of Houston “branch”) member Jim Otterson rounded out the lineup as second guitarist. Their first show, on July 3, 1995 was followed by recording sessions that would result in their first album, Lying Down out on Linus Pauling Quartet’s Ramon Medina (also a former Schlong Weasel-er) Worship Guitars label in 1996. The pace of recording and releasing would slow down considerably for the band, which wouldn’t quite get around to releasing the follow-up until 2003. In the meantime, Bo Morris would take over on drums for the kicked out Rick Costello, and Cramer would work with former Mike Gunn colleague Scott Grimm on his Dunlavy project. July 2003 would see the release of Project Grimm’s second album, Huge Beings (released on Camera Obscura’s Australian sister label Camera Lucida), but it would also see the band split — on the very day of the album’s release. Leader John Cramer would later appear as a solo artist working under the name the Powers of Light & Darkness, and played sporadic shows around Houston. – Chris M. True via allmusic.com

Luxurata (Houston, TX)
https://www.luxurata.com/

Get lost in the sonic rock and delicate melodies of this dual guitar band. The unique alt-pop/indie rock sound will leave you wanting more. Luxurata was formed in the spring of 2002 and consisted of long time musical collaborators Mike Porterfield (vocals & bass) and Brian Schack (guitar), Dave Darby (drums, formerly of Ruskabank). Texas guitar legend Harry O’ (from the famed Zealots) joined in 2011. The diverse musical background of its members comes together in the unique alt-pop/indie rock sound of the band. Compositions range from sonic guitar rock to delicate melodies.

Wednesday 20 June 2012 - Possessed By Paul James * Delaney Davidson

Possessed By Paul James (Austin, TX)
https://ppjrecords.com/

Possessed By Paul James is the stage name of multi-instrumentalist Konrad Wert. He was raised Mennonite with Amish roots in the swamps of Immokalee, Florida and presently resides with his wife and son in the Hill Country of Texas. Wert’s performances are so energetic that he could easily be mistaken for a small crowd. His songs are very honest. Not only are they completely personal and sincere, but they transcend identity and touch on the human condition. “Possessed is just… possessed by experiences and family (Paul and Melvin James),” Wert says. ”…I connect with that, with the beauty of the brokenness, innocence and/or ugliness.”

PPJ has been around now since 2006 touring domestically and internationally while finding a balance between family and the opportunities of music. “The goal is to be able to share and benefit both my family and those willing to listen. That is a success in my opinion and thus far it seems to be working it’s way out.”

In 2006 SYA Records of Milan, Italy pressed Wert’s first LP ‘Possessed by Paul James’ followed by his first European tour. In 2007 while touring overseas the Rev. Beatman of Voodoo Rhythm Records came to a PPJ show and liked what he heard and saw. Thus in 2008 ‘Cold and Blind’ was released, Wert’s second album. Presently we are awaiting PPJ’s 3rd record, ‘Feed the Family’ this time with the intent of going completely independent, pressing both CD, LP and 7-inch.

Needless to say it has been a slow and steady road for the music of Possessed by Paul James. As Wert likes to put it, “This isn’t a race. No one is coming in first or last, it’s simply a marathon in the process of music and that feels best.”

Delaney Davidson (New Zealand)
https://www.delaneydavidson.com/

Part man part wheel, Delaney Davidson is part wandering minstrel, part travelling salesman. One hand holds a small brown suitcase, his trade, his ghost orchestra, the other holds his guitar. One foot firmly in the Blues Trash corner of the ring, the other on the road, you could say Delaney sees music as he sees geography, and that although he has certain preferences, in fact all territories are up for grabs. Ireland, Germany, Italy, Brazil, UK, Switzerland, Mexico, Austria, Romania, Belgium, Holland, Russia, France, USA, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand, all destinations on the ten year Solo Tour with which Davidson has turned homelessness into a success of its own. Man of a thousand faces, his work with paint, music, film and concept all has traces of his unique take on life. Part new world and part old world, this duality is echoed in the flavours he evokes with his work; Past VS present, too loud for folk VS too quiet for rock, Light VS Dark, Davidsons restless work refuses to be still for the portrait it is asked to sit for. A pattern we see in his own restless life, indeed, the apple never falls far from the tree.

“One rotten apple ruins the whole barrel” laughs Delaney when asked to describe his work. “But then I think we all need a few rotten apples, and sometimes thats where the flavour comes from, ripe vs rotten, where does one cross over into the other”

This approach of DIY has a special flavour of its own, and can continually be seen in Davidsons work. “Neccessity is the mother of invention, and a lo budget will lead to all sorts of beautiful stand-in potential. Whistling instead of violins. I love to see things take a step, and I think people like to see the triumph of a good idea over a slick production, I think it gives them hope and inspiration. Ultimately the result of hi gloss is alienation and a removed and depressed let down feeling or not being good enough. I say let it all go!”

While Davidson seeks to embody this ethic he also displays a degree of skill in his work. His painting exhibitions of Nocturnal Landscape in the early 1990′s showed a minimal use of form bordering on abstract and a tonal blend of colours that were darker than black. What these works lacked in skill they made up for in concept; they delighted the man on the street and astounded the connisseur. While he has spread the word of both New Zealand aswell as Voodoo Rhythm all through the world, there has also been talk of his being awarded an Honorary Masters degree in recognition of the body of work that has appeared over the years from his hand.

He proves this true in the series of short video films he is continually releasing on Youtube. All made on little or no budget, each one a triumph of style and medium. Lending itself well to visuals, the personality of his musical work has been sought after for film soundtrack, see the “Flammend Herz” (story of Herbert Hoffman, Hamburg Reeperbahns oldest tatooist), aswell as “Netherwood ” a localised tale of rural darkness, and the Delaney scowl is immortalised by Slowboat Films as his portrayal of Parrish echoes across the screen in the soporiphic noircotic nightmare “The Road to Nod” ; the tale of an old Jailbird as he spirals to hell.

His doorkeeper stance on stage work has often been one of pioneer, as was shown in his introduction of the lap steel into the Basel Stadt-theatres production of Die Dreigroschen Oper. Again walking the lines between, Delaney’s master of ceremonies attack was a key ingredient in the success of “Random Acts of God” a Contemporary Dance show as response to Christchurchs Earthquakes by Corrupt Productions.

Wisconsins Steelbridge Songfestival (Brain child of Timbuk3′s Pat Macdonald), aswell as Port Lyttletons Harbour Union both showcased his dark sense of humour and his ability to write with others, as does his melodic work in the Dead Brothers, but he seems to come into his own when he is solo. “I think its hard enough to follow your own path or brain and find the time or space to hear it. The idea of asking anyone else to follow it seems like a huge task for all involved. If you only have one suitcase, you can move house in a half hour. On the other hand if you have your house tidied up you can invite people round to dinner, and I love to work with others on certain things to acheive a flavour I can’t capture alone”

However nothing embodies his spirit of floating work as ramblingly succinctly as the eternal tour he began in the beginning of the century and still continues today. Work that encompasses some ten years and several continents, countless shows and numerous releases. He has shared the bills with Underground Queen Holly Golightly, Cult legend Reverend Beatman, Radical Film-maker Miron Zownir, German Intellectual Franz Dobler, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Jack Oblivian, Bob Log III , Dr Quintron and T model Ford. Has it become a way of life for him? “I never worked so hard as I do now, Self Emplyoment is the key to an early grave, I see this in lots of musician friends of mine aswell. you are your own travel agent, your own booking agent, your own photographer, your own graphic designer, your own manager, your own producer.. on top of that you are a musician. With my show I am the drummer, singer, guitarist and sometimes harmonica player, you could say it is not a way of life, it IS life”

Saturday 16 June 2012 - Hounds of Jezebel * Morgue City * Days Before

Hounds of Jezebel (Houston, TX)
https://www.houndsofjezebel.com/

Hounds of Jezebel formed in the summer of 2010 from former members of goneblind and Prognosis. John Curry(vocals, guitars), Chris Loveless(guitars), “Rooster” Rodriguez(bass, vocals), and Mike Neyra(drums, vocals) met through a mutual friend and quickly began working on some music for the soul or what would later become the “Black Light Sunshine” sessions. Having been seasoned pro’s, these guys have obviously seen the big stage. But it’s their chemistry, even having only been together for a short time, that draws you to them. Their ability to connect. To Play. To Rock. Is the undeniable……Hounds of Jezebel.

Morgue City (Houston, TX)
https://www.morguecity.net/

Morgue City is a band that has gone through many many changes in sound and personnel. Like any successful project in the entertainment world it must be made up of resilient and determined people. This is the case with Morgue City. The band that has a rock attack intensity as well as a more sinister edge as it delves into the darker realms of noiz and it’s concurrent drones. Some of the Morgue City sound is very pop rock oriented but there is always a deviant grind of sound laced in the song work. The band consists of two musicians with a very long history in the music business. Founder, SPIKE the Percussionist, is known from a long list of projects that include Astrogenic Hallucinauting, Childman, Doggebi, Delicate Terror and as the music director for the world renowned flesh suspension group Constructs of Ritual Evolution – CoRE. The lead guitar and vocals are handled by Raul who is a multi instrumentalist and has a long history of studio work and touring. Raul hails from such bands as M-87 and was the former bass player for Bozo Porno Circus. The result is a musical conglomeration both hauntingly familiar and refreshingly new as well as powerful and beautifully dark. Combine the likes of everything from classical to jazz and gloom to power noiz with catchy lyrics, sophisticated beats, and musically diverse melodies and the result is Morgue City.
