Rudyard’s 34th Anniversary

Who’s turning 34? Rudz is! And to prove it, we’re throwing an all day celebration. And you’re invited, and you, and you, too - hell, you’re all invited! Come early. Stay late. It’s gonna be great!

The day starts early with the Brewery Bike Tour Ride sponsored by New Belgium Brewery for the benefit of Bike Houston. We’ll meet up in the parking lot at 7:30 for an 8:00 start that will take us through town past Karbach, Buffalo Bayou & Saint Arnold’s breweries. There will be 2 routes - approximately 15 miles and 25 miles - with stops along the way at the breweries for some R&R. SAG support is available for those experiencing mechanical problems or a bit too much R&R. Anticipated return time to Rudz is around 10:00 where munchies will greet the returning cruise-aders! (That was terrible, I know)

A swap meet inside will be set up for mixing & mingling while munching. At noon, side games in the parking lot will commence. New Belgium Fat Tire pints and raffle tickets for jerseys will be sold & the proceeds will to be donated to Bike Houston. Fun & games will wind down around 2:00 to make room for non-cycling revelers to start appearing for the afternoon’s festivities.

Starting at 4:00 y’all get a raffle ticket with every drink ordered for the schwag give away that starts at 6:00. But you don’t have to wait until 6:00 to score, for those that have missed the opportunity to partake of this year’s Saint Arnold’s Divine Reserve 12 or just want more of that yummy brew, we are tapping our keg at 4:00.

Drinking, eating and the chance to haul home some righteous schwag - who could ask for more, right? But there is! Doors open at 8:00 for the free show starting at 9:00 upstairs. Grizzly hits the stage running, Dead Roses swings the middle and Ghost Town Electric rocks the top spot! Now, that’s turning 34 in style!

Ghost Town Electric (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ghost-Town-Electric/131608193563399

This is the story of Melvin, the Tromaville Health Club mop boy, who inadvertently and naively trusts the hedonistic, contemptuous and vain health club members, to the point of accidentally ending up in a vat of toxic waste. The devastating results then have a transmogrification effect, his alter ego is released, and the Toxic Avenger is born, to deadly and comical results. The local mop boy is now the local Superhero, the saviour of corruption, thuggish bullies and indifference.

“Ghost Town Electric dwell comfortably in this seemingly weird zone in between Hello Master-era Priestess and Mastodon; there’s a metal edge to everything but it’s not really metal, with bits of stoner-rock, ’70s rock-and-roll, and even rootsy barroom boogie peeking ’round the sides.” - Space City Rock

Dead Roses (Houston, TX)
https://www.myspace.com/deadrosesmusic

“We’re not just a band…..we’re a fucking tragedy” – with these immortal words, they launched into their debut set on Valentine’s Day of 2004, and H-town’s infamous DEAD ROSES were born. Since then, they have played shows with notable acts such as the DEMOLITION DOLLRODS, GLASS CANDY, DEAD MOON, BOBBY CONN, LOST SOUNDS, LES GEORGES LENINGRAD, FATAL FLYING GUILLOTINES, MEAT PUPPETS, and DIRT BOMBS. Heart broken, sleep deprived, glam damage is this group’s forte. Their formidable line-up includes former members of the LEPERS, INTROVERTS, CULTURCIDE, PAIN TEENS, TRUTH DECAY, VULGARIANS, NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE, THE HAUNTING ALLURE OF ELKE PALLENBERG’S VOID, SWARM OF ANGELS, HIGH ALMOND CONTENT, NTX PISTOLS, DISCOMFORTRON, BALACLAVAS, FUTURE BLONDES, DIAMONDS AND PEARLS, AFTER PARTY, UNGARISCHE DEUTSCHE FREUNDSCHAFT, DOTS, MYSTERY FLAVOR, and BRIDE OF PINBOT to name a few. DEAD ROSES have recorded and re-recorded their epic first release nine times, but refuse to put it out until it absolutely meets their impossibly high standards of excellence. Other activities/interests include socializing with international superstars, needlepoint, speaking with fake foreign accents, experimenting with eyeliner, and getting kicked out of ALICE COOPER concerts.

Grizzly (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Grizzly/175346702477569

At the end of 2008 a Craigslist add was answered by a country style trio to enlist a singer-songwriter. In one fell swoop, singer-songwriter Chad Lyles managed to find a group of like minded musicians to help bring Grizzly to fruition. Grizzly at that point was a four piece that brought simplistic story telling and raw energy together that spanned the age and genre gaps. After a year of writing and a 3 song demo the boys in grizzly felt that there was something missing. After much debate, Chad’s long time friend and jazz student/teacher Matt Peters was recruited as a lead guitarist. This brought Grizzly to a whole new level of musicianship. With the impeccable timing of Ric’s drumming paired with Joe Varner’s catchy pocket bass lines and held down by Brian Ramsey’s solid rhythm guitar sprinkled with his own memorable melodies, Matt’s wandering leads and the raspy story telling of Chad’s vocals, Grizzly intertwines rock roots with classic country, punk and rockabilly to create a new style of Southern Americana. In the summer of 2009 Grizzly met Eric Tucker (Jesse Dayton/ Whiskey Boat) who was interested in producing a record with them. After a few months in the studio, and with the guidance of Eric, Grizzly’s first baby was born; ‘How Fast They Fade’ A six song EP, that is the culmination of the band’s hard work and late night debauchery. Looking toward the future Grizzly is currently writing new songs, playing shows and looking forward to taking their music on the road.

8eTribe (Houston, TX)

https://www.facebook.com/8etribe

8eTribe (a performance group combined with Sideshow freaks, DJs, Dancers, light shows, cross dressers, and all around sick individuals) brings the pain…and the glory!! It’s always good to kick off a show with something you’re probably not going to see in your life unless you’re standing in front of 8eTribe!!

The Bad Drugs (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/TheBadDrugs

Any good time, especially a Rock Revel, would start by taking a pop of The Bad Drugs. Their punk stylings are the perfect outlet for your angst. Come rock with these rebels in the battle against the City of Houston’s unscientific noise ordinance.

Fox and Cats (Houston, TX)

https://www.facebook.com/foxandcats

The perfect transition from punk stylings is the pop punk duo in Fox & Cats. The Rock in their vocal harmonies, guitar, and lightening quick drumming is phenomenol. These two are exceptional musicians!

Deadend Cowboys (Houston, TX)

https://www.facebook.com/deadend.cowboys

And now for something completely different. The Southern Country Rock aka “Texas Junk” riffs of The Deadend Cowboys are the perfect contrast to punk in this showcase of Montrose rock and roll. Any good rock scene will have something for everybody, and a rock scene needs rockout people who like it all.

Second Lovers (Houston, TX)

https://www.facebook.com/secondlovers

The perfect encore sound for Southern Country Rock is the explosive folk sound of Second Lovers. Recently nominated for Best Americana in the Houston Press Music Awards (be sure to vote for them), Second Lovers boasts the talents of five amazing musicians, putting forth melodies and harmonics that will make you smile as they slide right into your ear canal and enlighten your soul.

March to the Sea (Houston, TX)

https://www.facebook.com/pages/March-to-the-Sea/177933358960304

Next is the march to a modern beat with March to the Sea. This band is described as Explosions in the Sky meets Thrice. They will fill the room with musical movements that will make your body Rock and your mind explode.

Shotgun Funeral (Houston, TX)

https://www.facebook.com/shotgunfuneral

The explosions will only get bigger with Shotgun Funeral. This is the best time you’ll ever have at a funeral because these musicians leave bad times in their wake. The Rock in this band comes in a mix of swing, polka, jazz, and Americana through electric and acoustic guitars, bass, drums, mandolin, violin, and accordian. They all get their turn to get after it and bring the revelry to a whole nutha level.

The Trimms (Houston, TX)

https://www.facebook.com/thetrimms

The pinnacle of Rock in the Montrose right now can be found in a little ole band from Houston that calls themselves The Trimms. Recently nominated for Best Rock band in Houston (vote for them), this trio brings blues-based rock back with a fury.

The Trimms are a stinging guitar, powerful vocals, one of the best drummers in Houston (Gabe Bravo, vote for him on his individual Houston Press Music Award nomination), and a bass player that can shred an electric guitar. Rock should bring passion. The Trimms Rock with passion, for sure.

To boot, many great artists and performers that frequent the Montrose will entertain revelers between sets. Be Ready for artists installations and wares, spoken word, performance art, news satire, hula hooping, and spankings. Yes, spankings!

On July 10th, Tom was transferred to a medical rehabilitation facility in Germany, near the Baltic Sea where he will receive medical care, monitoring, and physical rehabilitation. It is expected Tom’s recovery will take months, and he will remain in Germany for the time being. If all goes as planned, doctors have recommend that he may be able to return to work and regular activity by January 2013.

Project Grimm (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Project-Grimm/121509194528707

A decidedly less experimental group than its most direct predecessor, the Mike Gunn, Project Grimm was formed in 1995 by Gunn frontman and guitarist John Cramer to satisfy his urges to be a bit more straightforward in his approach to guitar rock. Interested in looking to build a band around this new direction, Cramer called local drummer Rick Costello (…of Houston band Bleachbath) who volunteered his services straight away. Drew Calhoun joined on bass, and former Schlong Weasel (University of Houston “branch”) member Jim Otterson rounded out the lineup as second guitarist. Their first show, on July 3, 1995 was followed by recording sessions that would result in their first album, Lying Down out on Linus Pauling Quartet’s Ramon Medina (also a former Schlong Weasel-er) Worship Guitars label in 1996. The pace of recording and releasing would slow down considerably for the band, which wouldn’t quite get around to releasing the follow-up until 2003. In the meantime, Bo Morris would take over on drums for the kicked out Rick Costello, and Cramer would work with former Mike Gunn colleague Scott Grimm on his Dunlavy project. July 2003 would see the release of Project Grimm’s second album, Huge Beings (released on Camera Obscura’s Australian sister label Camera Lucida), but it would also see the band split — on the very day of the album’s release. Leader John Cramer would later appear as a solo artist working under the name the Powers of Light & Darkness, and played sporadic shows around Houston. – Chris M. True via allmusic.com

The Linus Pauling Quartet (Houston, TX)
https://www.worshipguitars.org/LP4/
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Linus-Pauling-Quartet/16831955249

Pure guitar muscle and Texas Stoner Metal Psych insanity with universal themes like drugs, beer, sci-fi/fantasy, and Bongs of Power. If you like your riffs heavy, the solos unyielding, and the smell of the bong to billow out of your stereo, the LP4 is your band.

“a core point about the Linus Pauling Quartet isn’t merely that they’re a great psych band, but a great band period, able to embrace a lot of styles and moods and work them well. ” – Ned Raggett, Allmusic.com

“Anthemic, stupid and selflessly unrestrained, the LPQ eventually attain self immolation of sorts during the sprawling chaos.”– Phil Mc Mullen, Ptolemaic Terrascope (UK)

“Variety through dementia indicative of excessive drug use and boredom.”– Flipside

“Compulsory listening for anyone interested in modern American guitar rock, or just plain alternative music.”–Crohinga Well (Belgium)

” [the band] should consider doing a few less bonghits”–Michael Davis of Option Magazine

“A quartet of Texas weirdos who’re smart enough to play it real stupid, mining that fine line between drug-induced idiocy and conceptual genius for way more than you might’ve thought it was worth.”– Kevin Moist, Deep Water.

“I don’t know what kind of drugs they’ve put in the Texas water supply, but I hope they keep doing it, because now we have these mutant sons of Yeti.”–Factsheet 5

“…possibly the most enigmatic yet bombastic rock band to emerge out of Texas inthe last 10 years.”–Mats Gustafsson & Lee Jackson – The Broken Face(Sweden)

“… a 2,500-microdot dose of conceptual zig-zaggery so daunting that Roger Dean would get a hernia trying to sketch the album sleeve. Imagine Captain Beefheart’s magic Band “reworking” Pink Floyd’s Atom Heart Mother right on the cusp of the Rapture. ” –Fred Mills – Magnet(US)

“Not surprisingly for a product of the same hometown as the Red Krayola and Rusted Shut, Houston’s Linus Pauling Quartet is equal parts demented and lovable. A sevenpiece with several guests, the Quartet specializes in waves of psychedelic slog thicker than humidity coming off Buffalo Bayou in August. At the same time, C6H8O6 doesn’t abandon humor or melody in its overwhelming sonic onslaught…Like Slater says in Dazed and Confused, “You couldn’t handle that shit on strong acid, man.” On second thought, maybe that’s the only way you could.” – Christopher Gray, Austin Chronicle

Dead Mineral (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/deadmineral

Formed in 2005 under the name Novox, Dead Mineral have been blasting Houston area bars and clubs with mostly instrumental dual guitar driven rock that wraps beauty inside searing noise. Members collectively hail from other Houston bands including Dry Nod, Sprawl, The Drunks, STOMA, The Keenlies, Run Trip and Fall, Rusted Shut, Project Grimm, Texas Guinness Lovers.

“This four-piece formed in 2005, originally billing themselves as Novox. They released a split seven-inch on Four Letter Music with Fired For Walking this year. The Dead Mineral side features their track “Hyper-Vigilance,” a melodic, shifting instrumental number. Houston’s first and foremost “Ouija Rock” band (note, if anyone wants to hop on that bandwagon, you’re likely to be the second) is definitely worth a listen, especially for those who admire Explosions In The Sky but want something a little surlier.” - Houston Press

Hearts of Animals (Houston, TX)
https://www.myspace.com/heartsofanimals

Not what I expected at all, this is way more femme-digi Slumberland label-style than the abrasive distorto-punk I was more than half-expecting given the pile of grit it was plucked from at Z Gun Western HQ. Four tracks of drifty-dreamy female vocals layered onto spiky-chiming guitars that are sashay-picking their way thru that same sunny field that Ray Davies and Co. are waltzing thru inside the gatefold of Village Green Preservation Society. It also evokes some of those waaaay-downstream post-UK-DIY labels of the 90’s such as Che or Pickled Onion, back when drum machines were first being set at a steadily reactionary 60-70bpm, like these ‘uns done. Most twee-skirting indie pop barely makes it thru the was for me, but this makes my mood feel a mite bit…pink. -From Z Gun

Another Tejas 7″ that showed up on my doorstep is a 4 song ep by a band what’s called Hearts Of Animals. Actually I suspect it’s a solo effort but I’ll check the facts later. Right now it don’t matter. There’s elements that smack hard of shoegazer nonsense like Velocity Girl & that ilk, but when it flys-which it does on 2 tracks-it soars through the same jet stream as Amos & Sara or Family Fodder. Really terrific diy dub/psych minimalism & it might be the 1st record to come outta Houston that I kinda like since Charalambides split that swamp. -Roland Woodbe of Slitbreeze records

Quite the find here, a natural bridge between straightforward indie pop traditions and some more daring territory, where I thought Tickley Feather might be headed. I’m much more fond of this Mlee Marie’s work when it’s abstract and loaded with delay, skronking horns, and a psychedelic/free mindset at play. And luckily, two of the four tracks here fit that description; opener “Stars Say No” being the hit, and the most far-reaching track here, and the repetitive gait of “Stop Talking” a mincing, relentless blast of blue sunshine. Truth be told, the pop songs are good too, just not as unique as the other tracks. Very excited to hear more of what she’s doing. Good one. 300 copies. - Dusted Magazine

Thursday 23 August 2012 – Will Makar & The Red Line

Will Makar & The Red Line (The Woodlands, TX)
https://www.willmakar.com/home/

Will Makar & The Red Line are a combination of memorable pop hooks and radio-ready rock, with an unforgettable live show that comes from hard work, commitment, and the deep musical talent of the band assembled by frontman Will Makar. The 6-piece band came together in the fall of 2009 while they were all attending The Berklee College of Music in Boston, and began playing their live gigs within weeks of forming with a set list drawn from Will’s debut album as well as crowd-favorite covers by DMB, John Mayer, Jason Mraz and many others.

Will Makar and The Red Line is comprised of Corey Rupp (Berwick, PA) on lead guitar, Kazumi Shimokawa (Shrewsbury, MA) on keyboards and guitar, Adrian Sealy (Shrewsbury, MA) on bass, Ale Giuliani (Argentina) on drums, Rhett Price (Midland, TX) on sax/violin, as well as vocalist Will Makar (Houston, TX) who first came to national prominence at the age of 16 as a top 14 finalist on American Idol 5.

The band’s self-titled Double Deal Brand Records debut, produced by Kazumi Shimokawa, is a refreshing blast of energy and musicianship that is both instantly familiar and truly unique, with the first single, “Love Cliché,” beginning from a simple piano hook and growing into a truly memorable love song with a sing-along ending equally at home on the stage as it is in your headphones.

Will Makar and The Red Line have already drawn large crowds at venues as diverse as Arlene’s Grocery in New York and MoMo’s in Austin, TX, and plan to tour throughout the remainder of 2010, with summer multi-date swings through New York City, Pennsylvania, Nashville, two weeks in Texas and many hometown gigs in Boston. Fall tour dates throughout the northeast are booking now.
