Monday 31 December 2012 - NEW YEARS EVE with Two Star Symphony * Letters To Voltron * Tody Castillo

Two Star Symphony (Houstron, TX)
https://twostarsymphony.com/

Two Star Symphony is Houston’s most unusual music ensemble. Composing and performing all-original music in quartet and octet configurations, Two Star brings modern instrumental music to a wide range of audiences, from classical music enthusiasts to first time listeners.

Two Star Symphony’s dark, distinctive sound is a result of the writing style they employ and the instruments on which they perform. The band works differently than most classical ensembles in that every member is also a composer. Songs are written and arranged live as a group, with each player responsible for his or her own parts. By the time the songs are finished, the music is memorized. Two Star does not create or use sheet music, so the player is free to focus on the other members and overall sound of the piece.

The instruments Two Star Symphony compose and perform with were built as a matched set by Master Luthier Anton Krutz. Read more about the instruments and Mr. Krutz here.

Two Star Symphony is known for collaborating with other artists and mediums. In that spirit, Two Star has created original works with American Ballet Theatre Studio Company, Dominic Walsh Dance Theatre, BobbinDoctrin Puppet Theatre, and many others. Under commission from the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and Discovery Green Park, Two Star Symphony created and performed a series of original scores to classic silent films. In 2007, The University of Houston School of Theatre & Dance premiered Two Star’s original musical soundtrack to Bertolt Brecht’s Good Woman of Setzuan. In 2008, Dominic Walsh Dance Theatre premiered Two Star Symphony’s first full-length ballet score to an original production of Titus Andronicus. In 2008 and 2010, Rice University partnered with Two Star to create the two-part Synesthesia series – an exploration of light and sound, featuring an array of lighting-systems paired with live music and performance. In spring 2011, Two Star Symphony partnered with hip-hop artist Fat Tony for a crossover performance that benefited Red Cross of Japan, and in November 2011, Two Star partnered with DJ Spookyfor a live performance celebrating the launch of Origin Magazine.

On December 10, 2011, Lionsgate Films released Psychic Experiment, a horror feature scored by Two Star. In January 2012, The Houston Chronicle named Two Star’s Titus Andronicus the best local album of 2011. In May 2012, Two Star received a Houston Arts Alliance Established Artist Grant, and in September 2012 Two Star partnered with The Mitchell Center and Aurora Picture Show to perform the U.S. premiere of the award-winningHeart Chamber Orchestra by European artists TERMINALBEACH. Also in September, Two Star performed onstage with Amanda Palmer and the Grand Theft Orchestra. October 2012 saw Two Star perform their new original score live alongside the premiere of “Silent Shadow of the Bat-Man”, a film by Andre Perkowski, who attended and introduced the event in person.

Two Star Symphony won “Best Indefinable Band” at the Houston Press Music Awards in 2009 and 2010, performed at the 2010 and 2011 SXSW Music Festival, and were featured speakers and performers at the 2010 TEDxHouston conference. Also in 2010, PBS broadcast a national feature about Two Star Symphony in conjunction with the SXSW appearance. In 2008, The Greater Houston Convention and Business Bureau named Two Star Symphony one of 15 reasons to visit Houston. In January 2012, The Houston Chronicle named Two Star’s Titus Andronicusthe best local album of 2011. In November 2012, Two Star was honored by the Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts (TALA) as their Artists of the Year. They have received coverage ranging from the Houston Chronicle, Houston Press and Austin Chronicle to the Huffington Post, New York Times and Spin Magazine.

Letters To Voltron – (Houston, TX )
https://www.letterstovoltron.com/

From the future form the past, Letters to Voltron began their quest to conquer the world through auto-erotic musical stylings and homemade macramé. Shortly after being introduced into modern society Robert Callicotte and John Wayne Comunale, and Marty Eck abandoned the macramé and started their own internet company at the age of twelve only to have it fold after six and a half months. Leaving thousands of disgr…untled shareholders in their wake the three pressed on with their sex crazed Robot to take on several other musical endeavors, including being loosely associated with Taint Magazine for a very short time. Now, under the Omega Prophet umbrella L2V are poised to take their endeavors into the 10th dimension.

Tody Castillo (Houston, TX)
https://www.todycastillo.com/

Steve Earle first heard Tody Castillo’s music when shopping for producers for Townes, his recent tribute to Townes Van Zandt. One listen to Castillo’s songs gave Earle enough confidence to hire Houston producer Steve Christensen, who helped produce and engineer the recording of Windhorse. Born out of personal tragedy, yet teeming with hope, the songs on Windhorse show Castillo’s depth of songwriting. They range from the dreamy lullaby to all-out rock-and-roll anthems. Castillo played most of the instruments on the recording, as well as being the only writer and singer. His beautiful voice has range and depth rarely found in today’s rock scene. This work maintains the cross-genre appeal that helped his 2005 self-titled release find a broad audience, earning the musician Houston Press‘ Best Unsigned Act award in 2005 (along with nominations for Song of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, and Best Rock/Pop). The album was also the top-selling release at Cactus Music and Video in 2005, outselling even the likes of Coldplay.

“This record unique for me because I’m such a different person,” Castillo says. “I released the first record in February 2005, a few months after I got married. A few months after that, I lost my brother due to an accident. That kind of thing is devastating. My wife then lost someone close in her family as well at the end of 2005. We joked about that year as being ‘the year of the death.’ The following year while playing and promoting the first record, my first son was born. So I lost a brother, and became a husband and a father all around the same time. This record is about that.”

Recorded during coffee-fueled sessions at The Treehouse, the Houston Heights garage apartment studio of Steve Christensen, Windhorse is a series of intimate snapshots into Castillo’s life. The heartbreak over the death of his brother and the joy of becoming a father echo throughout this work. Musicians Eddy Hobizal, Chris Masterson (currently with Son Volt), Steve Brown, and Ryan Biddle helped the duo by adding their skills to the piano, guitar, bass, and percussion on several songs.

Album highlights include “The Shape Of My Heart,” “Spoken Up Sooner,” “The Other Side of Love,” “Hearts On A String,” and “Mustang Island”.

Super Robot Party (Houston, TX)

I hadn’t seen Super Robot Party, but I know the guys from 10 years ago. Matt Crow was in mytwilightpilot, and there’s a definite mtp stamp on their sound, but the vocals take the band in a decidedly britpop direction, so it comes out a little like if you slowed down and then Americanized the sound of Doves. in other words, beautiful!- Jason Smith – spacecityrock.com

Super Robot Party: This new reverb-laden five piece crafts ethereal shoegaze drones, touched with tidbits of folk. The experimental mixture sounds a lot like someone’s garage in 1991, heck even a blend of several garages on the street, full of kids and guitars. The Pasadena group has nearly three dozen tracks available on Soundcloud, or for the full experience, catch them tonight at Dean’s with Jealous Creatures and A Sundae Drive.-Marc Brubaker – The Houston Press

Jennifer O’Brien was creeping around on Facebook one day and came across Ashley Parker’s profile with her profile picture of her playing bass. Jennifer decided one day to contact Ashley and ask if she was down for a jam, Ashley agreed.
After jamming together and drinking whiskey they decided it was love and started a band. Still wanting a full band they tried out Bryan Hoff originally on drums. That same day Derik Silva tried out on drums too and brought the energy the gals were looking for. During the rest of the jam sesh Bryan picked up a guitar and jammed along. It all clicked after everyone got in the zone and just grooved together.

The Wiggins (Houston, TX)

Lo-fi living… THE WIGGINS have played these cool as f*** bands: DANIEL JOHNSTON, GANG GANG DANCE, INDIAN JEWERLY, THE BLACK LIPS, KONG SAUCE, STEREO TOTAL, QUINTRON, FINALLY PUNK, RUA MINX, TIMES NEW VIKING, and GLASS CANDY!+ some others(you know who you are!!)…. played at SXSW 2007, yeah, rad.. And here’s a recent review from PUNK PLANET!!! check it: Part electro surf punk from outer space, part David Lynch outtake, and part home brewed garage opiate, I’m not exactly sure what The Wiggins are, but whatever it is, it’s in’ rad. Think the redefinition of lo-fi, Lou Reed in a garage disposal, Johnny Thunders’vampire alter-ego, leper underwear parties, and successful amateur noir snake charming. Rumor has it there’s just one local Houstoner behind all this madness, which makes the effort even more impressive. This is the stuff of magic that gluttonous hipster vultures and college radio DJs will be getting all weak the knees about once Pitchfork clocks in a 8.372, so do yourself a favor and get it while it’s fresh. Dead Roses (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Dead-Roses/232683603420051

“We’re not just a band…..we’re a fucking tragedy” – with these immortal words, they launched into their debut set on Valentine’s Day of 2004, and H-town’s infamous DEAD ROSES were born. Since then, they have played shows with notable acts such as the DEMOLITION DOLLRODS, GLASS CANDY, DEAD MOON, BOBBY CONN, LOST SOUNDS, LES GEORGES LENINGRAD, FATAL FLYING GUILLOTINES, MEAT PUPPETS, and DIRT BOMBS. Heart broken, sleep deprived, glam damage is this group’s forte. Their formidable line-up includes former members of the LEPERS, INTROVERTS, CULTURCIDE, PAIN TEENS, TRUTH DECAY, VULGARIANS, NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE, THE HAUNTING ALLURE OF ELKE PALLENBERG’S VOID, SWARM OF ANGELS, HIGH ALMOND CONTENT, NTX PISTOLS, DISCOMFORTRON, BALACLAVAS, FUTURE BLONDES, DIAMONDS AND PEARLS, AFTER PARTY, UNGARISCHE DEUTSCHE FREUNDSCHAFT, DOTS, MYSTERY FLAVOR, and BRIDE OF PINBOT to name a few. DEAD ROSES have recorded and re-recorded their epic first release nine times, but refuse to put it out until it absolutely meets their impossibly high standards of excellence. Other activities/interests include socializing with international superstars, needlepoint, speaking with fake foreign accents, experimenting with eyeliner, and getting kicked out of ALICE COOPER concerts.

Mondo Generator (Los Angeles, CA)
https://www.facebook.com/officialmondogenerator

Mondo Generator was formed in 1997 by Queens of the Stone Age bassist/singer Nick Oliveri. Initially intended as a solo/side project, the classic “Cocaine Rodeo” album was recorded that same year, but shelved until the Southern Lord label released it and its unique brand of criminal insanity to widespread acclaim and horror in the summer of 2000. The follow-up, “A Drug Problem That Never Existed,”…was released jointly in the Summer of 2003 by Ipecac/Rekords Rekords to further critical acclaim. A worldwide tour followed that was chronicled on video for the DVD release “Use Once and Destroy Me”. In 2004, Mondo Generator recorded and released “III The EP.” Oliveri began a solo acoustic career shortly after, which would see two full releases, “Demolition Day”, and 2010’s “Death Acoustic.” In 2006, Mondo Generator released “Dead Planet: Sonic Slow Motion Trails” on English label Mother Tongue. It would be released worldwide the following year on Suburban Noize Records. In late 2010, Mondo Generator would be put on a back-burner as Oliveri rejoined Kyuss, re-branded as Kyuss Lives!, which also featured John Garcia, Brant Bjork, and new guitarist Bruno Fevery. In early 2012, Oliveri exited Kyuss Lives and is now concentrating full-time on Mondo Generator. The new album, “Hell Comes To Your Heart,” is being released on July 3 via Mondo Media/Cobraside.

Hell City Kings (Houston, TX)

https://www.facebook.com/Hellcitykings

Formed in the Fall of 2004, the Hell City Kings appeared on the Houston punk/rock and roll scene with a well established following. With all of the Hell City Kings’ members having played in various other local bands for years, the group had no trouble playing packed shows throughout the Houston area. Due to the diligence of the band, their incredibly energetic and high intensity live shows, and …t…heir well founded reputation, the Hell City Kings quickly became the “go to” band for local booking agents looking for an opening act for some of their biggest shows. Among those acts were The Dwarves, The Reverend Horton Heat, and even European bands like Turbonegro. Venue size and location, the crowd or lack thereof, and juggling personal lives with band priorities could not keep the Hell City Kings down. The band has played shows ranging from sold out shows at the House Of Blues in Houston to local shows on weekends/weekdays at their home away from home, Rudyard’s Pub. No matter what the show may have to offer, as long as there are people looking for great rock and roll, the Hell City Kings are there to give it to them. Traveling out of town has also fueled the Hell City Kings’ desire to truly be a working band. Hell City Kings have played throughout Texas including Austin, San Antonio, and Corpus Christi. In addition to their love for playing live music, the Hell City Kings have also looked to duplicate that success in the studio. In 2006 the band released its first split 7”, with fellow Houston punks I Am Wolf, to rave reviews. Shortly after, they were nominated for “Best Punk Band” at the annual Houston Press Awards. Following the release of the split, Hell City Kings looked to expand their release repertoire with 2009’s “The Road To Damnation” LP. It took a while to find the right people for the job, but after numerous snags in the studio, the Hell City Kings forged ahead and finished recording in the first few months of 2009. Now, with the release of their first full length record, the Hell City Kings Are poised to take the rock and roll world by storm.

Saturday 22 December 2012 - The El Birthday Metal Fest II: Sanctus Bellum * Cauldron * H.R.A. * Owl Witch * Serpent Sun with special guests Bobby Liebling of Pentagram and James Rivera of Helstar

Members of Pentagram and Helstar to Perform One-of-a-Kind Sets with Sanctus Bellum in Houston, TX

Bobby Liebling of Pentagram and James Rivera of Helstar will perform special one-time-only sets with members of Sanctus Bellum at The El Birthday Metal Fest II on December 22, 2012 at Rudyard’s British Pub in Houston, TX. The sets with Liebling and Rivera, styled Sanctus Bellum Sanctuary and Sanctus Bellum Sanctus respectively, will see the heavy metal icons performing songs that they have rarely, if ever, performed previously during their lengthy careers.

For the Sanctus Bellum Sanctus set with Rivera, the band will perform a set of classic metal covers reflecting Sanctus Bellum and James Rivera’s shared influences. The set will include material by both well-known and comparatively underground bands and is sure to please fans of Rivera’s extensive body of work.

For the Sanctus Bellum Sanctuary set with Bobby Liebling, the band will perform a full set of 70s Pentagram classics, most of which have not been performed live in decades and some of which have never been performed live at all. Speaking on the Sanctus Bellum Sanctuary set, Sanctus Bellum bassist Ben Yaker stated that “anyone who knows me knows that I’ve been a huge Pentagram fan for years and that my favorite incarnation of the band is the 70s lineup. This show has given me the opportunity to select some of my favorite, but often overlooked, Pentagram tracks that I’ve always wanted to hear Bobby perform live. It’s an incredible honor to be able to share the stage with Bobby, who’s been the driving force behind my all-time favorite band, Pentagram, and with James, who’s helmed the most significant metal band ever to come out of Houston.”

The festival, which will also feature performances by Sanctus Bellum, Cauldron (ex-Gammacide), H.R.A., Owl Witch and Serpent Sun, celebrates the birthdays of Yaker and Sanctus Bellum guitarist Jan Kimmel. Artwork for the event by Will Broadbent Illustration, which will be available as a full color 24×36 poster at the show, features the members of Sanctus Bellum, along with Liebling and Rivera, animated as members of the Legion of Doom.
