The Pink Collar Comedy Tour
https://www.pinkcollarcomedytour.com/

The Pink Collar Comedy Tour, featuring comedians Kaytlin Bailey, Carrie Gravenson, Abbi Crutchfield and Erin Judge, is cutting-edge, hilarious stand-up comedy.

The Pink Collar Comedy Tour is the brainchild of Kaytlin Bailey, a native of Raliegh, NC, who moved to New York to pursue comedy and recruited her favorite NYC-based female comedians for this month-long Southern adventure. The Pink Collar tour begins at the world-renowned Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC, and then continues to Wilmington, Raleigh, Chapel Hill, and Asheville, NC. The tour culminates with performances in Maryland as the Pink Collar comics wind their way back up to the Big Apple.

Kaytlin Bailey, a College of Charleston alumna, is a founder of the TriBeCa Comedy Collective, and she performs regularly at the famous Gotham Comedy Club in Manhattan. When it came time to bring her stand-up act back to the Carolinas, she decided that an all-female comedy tour would be an excellent way to do it. “It’s always a privilege to work with these hilarious women in New York,” says Bailey. “I can’t wait to bring them home with me to make audiences laugh together down South!”

Abbi Crutchfield is a comedian, writer, and actor originally from Indianapolis, Indiana. She has appeared on MTV and VH1, and she was recently named one of the 18 Funny Women You Should Be Following on Twitter by Huffington Post Comedy. Abbi performs on the sketch team “Gramps” at the world-renowned Upright Citizen’s Brigade theater in New York, and you can read her work on Witstream.com.

Carrie Gravenson, a native New Yorker, won the 2009 New York Underground Comedy Festival’s Emerging Talent Stand-Up Competition, and was a runner up in 2009′s Catch a Rising Star Stand-Up Competition. She currently performs comedy all over the country and co-produces “The Tomfoolery Hour,” a popular monthly showcase in New York City.

Erin Judge, who grew up in Brooklyn, New York and Plano, Texas, has appeared on Comedy Central’s “Live at Gotham” and at comedy clubs and festivals all around the world. Her first stand-up album, entitled “So Many Choices,” will be released by Rooftop Comedy Productions on June 26, 2012.

Saturday 26 January 2013 - Occult Detective Club * Something Fierce * The Pastees * The Key Bumpz

Occult Detective Club (Denton, TX)
https://occultdetectiveclub.wordpress.com/
Occult Detective Club‘s sophomore album, Crimes, is every bit of the three-chord wonder that we loved all those years ago. There isn’t anything overly technical, complicated, or shocking; Occult Detective Club avoids the “musician’s Punk” that prevails these days, and runs with 1 minute songs and less than poetic lyrics (…) Bottom line: Crimes is awesome but not complex. That’s how punk rock should be. – TrendRobot

It’s more than a homage to the golden age of punk, they have refined this sound to a fine art adding too their own quirks and styles. – Barrygruff

I was prepared to write this one off as generic Sham 69 pump-your-fist punk, but then the words demanded to be heard and I was hooked. The main man here is Alex Anguiano, who sings like the bastard child of Win Butler and Joey Ramone (not as horrible as it sounds) and resembles Lance Hahn’s Chicano cousin and writes with a conciseness and economy of phrase that is always human. His empathy for people shines throughout. The first two tracks (including current single “C’mon Levi”) concern the tragedy that is New Orleans and dig this big crux: “This town’s worst can still beat where I’m from.” Amen, brother. – The Noise

If you threw this on, and I knew nothing about it, I’d have said it was from 1978. – Mary Leary / Dagger

It’s tough coming up with anything new in punk rock that isn’t going to sound as if you were trying too hard to reinvent something that’s as basic as it gets. Occult Detective Club know this, and that’s why their sophomore effort works so well. Dive into as few chords as possible is the motto, keep the drum rolls constant, and deliver snappy lines like “Until our bitter end/You can buy my cigarettes/We’ll drain our bank accounts/Cause that’s what love’s about” somewhere within the allotted time frame. The dozen tracks total less than a half-hour — a slap in the face to the quartet’s base of Denton, Texas, where everything is supposed to be bigger. Songs abound about government (“Oh, Bureaucracy”), getting out of a one-horse town, and young love (“Young Lovers” – duh). Ska creeps in, as it tends to do in these affairs, and not as if it could ever happen but at times it does seem the Bosstones are trying to choke out the Clash. It’s from the latter that ODC draw much of their influence, with anti-establishment sentiment often the underlying theme, as on “Running from the Red Squad.” Because even if it’s paint by numbers, the popo still don’t like punkers. – Michel Christopher / The Boston Phoenix

For all of the band’s reference points, they’ve created their own unique sound. The playing is tight, the production values stellar and Alx Anguiano’s vocals providing the perfect punk snarl.
CRIMES showcases a band understanding who they are and where they’re going and can only mean this is the beginning of greater things for this young band. – Carl Cortez / Assignment X

Done and dusted in 28 minutes, there’s nary a sniff of a ballad or a hint of wimping out on the agenda here. Judging by the sleeve photo, OCD look unfeasibly young and fresh-faced, but they knock out their hyperactive ramalama with an intensity that’s tangible and infectious, not to mention a passion and commitment that puts most of the current young pretenders to shame. – Tim Peacock / Whisperin & Hollerin
Something Fierce (Houston, TX)
https://www.somethingfiercemusic.com/

Something Fierce is a three-piece punk/pop band from Houston, Texas whose music combines the sound and attitude of first-wave 1977 punk with an energy and outlook that’s thoroughly contemporary, updating the attack of the Clash and the Buzzcocks for the 21st century.

Something Fierce were founded in 2005 by guitarist and lead vocalist Steven Garcia (ex-Gun Crazy and Born Liars) and bassist and vocalist Niki Sevven (formerly with the Neckbreakers); the group went though several drummers before teaming up with Andrew Keith, who they recognized from his frequent presence at local shows and parties.

In 2006, Something Fierce recorded their debut album, Come for the Bastards, which they released themselves. The release was followed by frequent touring through the Southwest, with occasional road trips into the South and Midwest; they group also recorded a handful of 7″ releases, including a split single with the Hangouts. In 2008, Something Fierce released their second full-length album, There Are No Answers; while the first pressing of the album was distributed by the band itself, the Portland, Oregon-based punk label Dirtnap Records liked the disc and reissued it after signing the band in 2009.

The band continued to tour extensively and released a 7″ on Action Town Records in 2010 before recording their third album, Don’t Be So Cruel, in 2011. The third album found Something Fierce’s sound evolving in a more sophisticated, pop-influenced direction without losing sight of their punk roots. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Friday 25 January 2013 - The Shadow * Sheila Swift * Beautiful Disturbance

The Shadow (Houston,TX)
https://www.theshadowofficial.com/

“The Shadow’s journey towards world domination comes as a result of persistence, drive and determination. It is the band’s goal to bring a good share of David Lynch-inspired contrast to the musical world in a style the band calls “Shadow Rock.” The Shadow builds each of their songs on a foundation of relentless punk rock guitar then tops it all off with softly feminine lead vocals. It is a simple concept that is at once fresh and exciting. This inspiration is best realized on The Shadow’s new self-titled debut on NDN Records. The CD features 13 original songs recorded in September and October of 2011 in the band’s Houston home base. Musician/Producer Alan Lee Shaw (Ex-The Maniacs, The Rings and The Damned) flew from his London base to join the band in Texas in order to produce this important debut. The band’s winning formula first helped them rise in the local Houston, Texas scene almost immediately after their original formation in 2008. The Shadow’s first line-up ”— Tom Kidd, The Shadow Celebrate CD Release With Hong Kong Live Debut

“ After the initial sweeping vengeance of punk took hold after 1977, a sweeping platform of New Music strode in, re-landscaping pop music. In that heady era, all things converged, from Talking Heads and the Records to Joe Jackson and Ultravox. That’s the genre I sense when listening to Texas-based the Shadow, who melds punk’s knack for the inchoate and off-kilter with a savvy sense of trad-rock hooks and pop-a-delic fare. To be sure, for every bit of mustered, seething psychodrama they vent, a bit of the Age of Aquarius leaks out with modern flair, pummeling, and agility. “Punk Rock Agent” slips into the earlobe with persistent charm, easily mustering a week’s worth of humming and silent sing-along head nods in the grocery store aisle. Sure, it lacks roughhewn edges and emotional bullets, but the tune’s caffeinated pulse adeptly combines layers of streamlined surf, titanic pop bombast, and a 1960s urge for danceability and crunchy guitar thrust. If a phenom single cut exist”— David Ensminger, PopMatters.com

“The Shadow benefits from crystal-clear female harmonies and some crunchy guitar work. If it wasn’t for singer Raquel’s presence, some of these songs would be redolent of Brian James-era Damned jams. Or, perhaps more accurately, Lords of the New Church as there’s a certain rock-noir feel. If you mst have a gender-specific comparison, there’s a ringing clarity to the vocals that recalls Throwing Muses in one of Kristin Hersh’s rockier phases. Best songs here are ‘Punk Rock Agent’ , which is a neat neat neat agenda statement (hear it on this issue’s covermount CD) and the self-title closing track, which has some gorgeous cyclical guitar tones. ‘Anna Manni’ is pretty convincing too - fittingly, given it’s apparently a tribute to Dario Argento’s ‘The Stendahl Syndrome’ where in people go weak at the knees when confronted with great works of art.” — Alex Ogg, Vive Le Rock

“Though all four of this rousing Houston quartet’s one-sided 7′ singles appear on this 13-track debut album, one presumes they’re re-recorded versions done with their explosive new rhythm section of bassist Kika and drummer Nick. To wit, the thundering redo of standout “Anna Manni” blows away the more restrained single version on YouTube. Throaty, husky-voiced belter Raquel Refuerzo is a total knockout, as invigoratind and commanding a vocalist as The BGellRay’s Lisa Kekaula, if less soul/R&B-influenced. She’s fueled by guitarist Henrik Bech Poulsen, who writes all the music and lyrics. Generously crams each song with ferocious, slashing punk.metal riffs, helping “Punk Rock Agent,” “Your Love is Suffocating,” and “Bittersweet” burn with conviction. It’s easy to see why they opened for The Damned in Hong Kong; I’m betting they were not outclassed.”— The Big Take-Over Magazine

Thursday 24 January 2013 - Gut Radio

Gut Radio (Baytown, TX)

It was kind of like Chernobyl, but better. One day, special agent Red Taint noticed that crew leader Death Shark was online, so he sent a textual communication message. Through a short conversation the two realized that they would be converging on the same metropolitan area within a few months. A few months after this indeed happened, a pact was made that the bearded rock and roll that would espouse from their alliance would shake the earth from the sound that is….
Gut Radio is a Nerd Rock duo from Houston, TX. Their sound seems to originate from the 90′s: Toadies, Weezer, Nirvana, etc. The two members of GR are extremely nerdy and like to show it by wearing black ties and white dress shirts at their shows. They’re a relatively new band (2011), but they stay busy, playing at Fitzgerald’s, Rudyard’s, the Mink and so on. In April 2012 they completed “Dynamic Fastener”, a four-song sampler of original songs. Listen and you won’t be disappointed.
