Friday 31 May - morgue city * Hollywood Roadkill * The Bad Drugs

Morgue City (Houston, TX)
https://morguecity.net

Morgue City is a band that has gone through many many changes in sound and personnel. Like any successful project in the entertainment world it must be made up of resilient and determined people. This is the case with Morgue City. The band that has a rock attack intensity as well as a more sinister edge as it delves into the darker realms of noiz and it’s concurrent drones. Some of the Morgue City sound is very pop rock oriented but there is always a deviant grind of sound laced in the song work. The band consists of two musicians with a very long history in the music business. Founder, SPIKE the Percussionist, is known from a long list of projects that include Astrogenic Hallucinauting, Childman, Doggebi, Delicate Terror and as the music director for the world renowned flesh suspension group Constructs of Ritual Evolution – CoRE. The lead guitar and vocals are handled by Raul who is a multi instrumentalist and has a long history of studio work and touring. Raul hails from such bands as M-87 and was the former bass player for Bozo Porno Circus. The result is a musical conglomeration both hauntingly familiar and refreshingly new as well as powerful and beautifully dark. Combine the likes of everything from classical to jazz and gloom to power noiz with catchy lyrics, sophisticated beats, and musically diverse melodies and the result is Morgue City.

Sunday 26 May 2013 - Five Eyes Wide * Brothers Grymn * Silk Knives

Five Eyes Wide (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/fiveeyeswide

FIVE EYES WIDE is metal at its finest! A true Texas band, its down to earth members hail from a variety of different backgrounds, not to mention a dizzying array of various influences from classical and flamenco, to R&B, rock and of course; heavy metal. In it for a good time; they simply write the music they want to hear. This sound is defined by a thunderous assault of driving rhythms and clarity, heavy guitars with soaring melodies, heart pounding bass, bone crunching drum beats, and smooth vocals that can turn downright monstrous at the drop of a hat. This is THE band to watch

Brothers Grymn (Houston/Austin, TX)

Exuding swagger and confidence by combining classic guitar riffs, boastful lyrics, a thundering beat with a modern electronic edge Brothers Grymn is quickly emerging as a new favorite. An army of sound, Brothers Grymn plays with a ferocity all its own.

Saturday 25 May 2013 - Bazile * Ruiners * We Scare Coyotes * Andy McWilliams

Bazile (Houston, TX)
https://www.bazilemusic.com/

Bazile’s Mississippi roots and affinity for film music contribute to his visceral and cinematic songwriting. Accompanied by drums and synthesizer or simply relying on his voice and guitar, he performs stripped-down live versions of his songs. In the studio, Bazile overdubs stringed and keyed parts creating a sound he calls “space folk” and which buffaBLOG has described as “part Beck, part Ben Folds, part Sufjan Stevens.”

Bazile’s debut album, The Sojourn of Professor Narducci, was engineered and co-produced by Alabma Shakes keyboard player Ben Tanner. Their experimental zeal and musical telepathy, which they first established as members of Daryl Strawberry’s New Drug, create an ambiance that transcends the album’s social and introspective themes.

After spending the second half of 2011 in Brazil, absorbing samba and Forest Gumping his way into a chance encounter with Arto Lindsay, Bazile relocated to Houston where he is playing shows and working on his second album.

Friday 24 May 2013 - Tody Castillo * Steve + Mel

Tody Castillo (Houston, TX)
https://www.todycastillo.com/

Steve Earle first heard Tody Castillo’s music when shopping for producers for Townes, his recent tribute to Townes Van Zandt. One listen to Castillo’s songs gave Earle enough confidence to hire Houston producer Steve Christensen, who helped produce and engineer the recording of Windhorse. Born out of personal tragedy, yet teeming with hope, the songs on Windhorse show Castillo’s depth of songwriting. They range from the dreamy lullaby to all-out rock-and-roll anthems. Castillo played most of the instruments on the recording, as well as being the only writer and singer. His beautiful voice has range and depth rarely found in today’s rock scene. This work maintains the cross-genre appeal that helped his 2005 self-titled release find a broad audience, earning the musician Houston Press‘ Best Unsigned Act award in 2005 (along with nominations for Song of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, and Best Rock/Pop). The album was also the top-selling release at Cactus Music and Video in 2005, outselling even the likes of Coldplay.

“This record unique for me because I’m such a different person,” Castillo says. “I released the first record in February 2005, a few months after I got married. A few months after that, I lost my brother due to an accident. That kind of thing is devastating. My wife then lost someone close in her family as well at the end of 2005. We joked about that year as being ‘the year of the death.’ The following year while playing and promoting the first record, my first son was born. So I lost a brother, and became a husband and a father all around the same time. This record is about that.”

Recorded during coffee-fueled sessions at The Treehouse, the Houston Heights garage apartment studio of Steve Christensen, Windhorse is a series of intimate snapshots into Castillo’s life. The heartbreak over the death of his brother and the joy of becoming a father echo throughout this work. Musicians Eddy Hobizal, Chris Masterson (currently with Son Volt), Steve Brown, and Ryan Biddle helped the duo by adding their skills to the piano, guitar, bass, and percussion on several songs.

Album highlights include “The Shape Of My Heart,” “Spoken Up Sooner,” “The Other Side of Love,” “Hearts On A String,” and “Mustang Island”.

Thursday 23 May 2013 - Retox * Donkey Punch * Texxxas * Ghost Police (8pm)

Retox (San Diego, CA)
https://retox.bandpage.com/

2012 has come and gone and we’re still not dead yet. You can log into the 24/7 smiling face, pictures of your friends drunk and/or naked, click “like”. The gray-faced man in a suit who hates you is still alive too, but now he isn’t always wearing a suit, and he’s smiling, 24/7. He likes what you like, sees what you see, hears what you hear. So where does punk go when the underground’s all tidily arranged on a shared screen? Does it roll over and play dead? Shrug? Smile? There’s another man, this one with a microphone jammed halfway down his throat, cord coiled carotid-tight around his neck, dangling his body off the edge of the stage, screaming words that ache. Another is methodically destroying his guitar with his hands while his feet twist tail-ends of the signal into electro-rubber-echo nightmares. Two others are so precisely abusing a bass guitar and a drum kit at such a frenetic pace it’s hard to believe these sorry objects will last more than a few more seconds, but then you realize it’s over. A minute or so, tops. They stare out at you, maybe say thanks. Spit. Breathe. And then they begin again. This will happen for maybe fifteen minutes, altogether. You are not alone. The gray-faced man is not here. There’s the screen, but then there’s this. 2013, and punk is not dead. No more dead than the rest of us.
—Zack Wentz

Retox formed in Southern California in 2010 and released their debut album, Ugly Animals by Retox, via Ipecac in 2011. Their new album is titled YPLL by Retox and will be released by the Epitaph recording company, May 2013.

“…BooTown’s totally amazing, super original and completely hilarious show, Grown-Up Storytime.”
~ Lydia O’Neil of Examiner.com

“BooTown’s a party!”
~Salvador Chevez

“When “Karen” was experimenting with prostitution, BooTown’s Emily Hynds told all about it. When humans-cum-rowdy-kitties unleashed their inner macho ghetto, BooTown listened. And when “John” saw a red-haired vagina for the first time, it was BooTown that captured his testimony. How has Houston survived without BooTown’s monthly “Grown-up Storytime” comedy bash?” - Joel Luks, Houston Culture Map
