“I was standing to the side of the stage at Tequila Rok one night when a Houston musician flagged me down. “Who IS that?” he asked, pointing to the three-piece band on stage, drummer Hanna Brewer’s wild hair floating up from the drums like a blonde flame lapping at the air.
“That,” I said with a characteristically dramatic whiskey pause, “is Purple.” The last half-dozen times I’ve seen Purple open for bands visiting Beaumont, each band responds the same: We have got to get on more bills with these guys.
Purple shows are a wild ride of old-fashioned rock ‘n roll energy, sometimes coming at you in tightly wound, pulsating coils, other times devolving into a glorious puddle of garagey punk rock mayhem. Being able to play seven-to-ten-minute instrumental songs and hold an audience’s attention is no easy task. Perhaps that’s why there aren’t many post-rock bands in Houston. It’s an ominous venture, especially when you run the risk of being compared to Austin’s infamous Explosions in the Sky. Co-Pilot is definitely not Explosions — the band has its own style of haunting, scenic post-rock. The four-member instrumental out of Houston and Austin uses a dark metal palette to paint landscapes with gradual crescendos and hasty decrescendos. The Phuss play fast, loud, dirty rock and roll. The three-piece from Fort Worth, TX, are best described as Garage Rock- loud as hell with fierce guitar riffs, punchy, raw lead bass, intense vocals, and precision drumming drenched in grease. The band formed in 2008 with front-man and guitarist Josh Fleming and drummer Trey Alfaro, adding bassist Forrest Barton in 2010.
