Saturday, November 30, 2013 - The Roots Rock Coalition Presents: The Mitch Jacobs Band * The Cowbell KIngs * The Clay Farmer Band

The Mitch Jacobs Band (Houston, TX)
https://www.mitchjacobsband.com/

“Back at Martell’s, Mitch Jacobs and band are tonkin’ and twangin’ hard. Jacobs goes into his Johnny Cash voice and does a restrained opening to Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down” before unleashing his band. The crowd is suddenly his.”
— William Michael Smith, Houston Press

“Houston may or may not appreciate its honest country singers, but San Antonio’s country fans have the opportunity to catch another Bayou City honky-tonker when Jacobs and his band roll in. Jacobs’ voice is deep and resonant, like Johnny Cash, and his repertoire also is deep and resonant. Listen for Jacobs and his band to preview songs from an upcoming EP, “Gulf Coast Jamboree,” set for release on the Steadyboy label next month.”
— Compiled by Jim Beal Jr., Hector Saldaña and John Goodspeed.

“Now there are singers who can put over a song and there are those blessed with incredible voices, very few have both. Mitch has both AND some …. ”
— Wes Mcghee, The McTwang Times

“Mitch has the most stunning vocal ability I have had the pleasure of working with in the studio. He can sing anything, anywhere, anytime, anyway.”
— Layton Depenning, Elmo’s Lab

“Mitch Jacobs’s hard-bitten Americana contains none of the British trappings of his producer and label boss Freddy “Steady” Krc. However, he does strike country-jukebox gold with “For a While” and “Lady on the Barstool.””
— Chris Gray, Houston Press

The Cowbell KIngs (Houston, TX)
https://www.reverbnation.com/CowbellKings

Cowbell Kings plays shows of original country/rock/pop style music, with powerful hooks, bucking syncopated rhythms, strong vocal harmonies, and soaring exciting instrumentation. The band plays also dance hall, country dance bars, private parties and ice house gigs doing well known country and rock’n’roll covers with original songs scattered into the mix. The band was previously called More Cowbell Tx, but there are several Texas bands with similar confusing names; as our band seemed to be the kings of all these, the new name is a natural.

The Clay Farmer Band (Houston, TX)
https://www.clayfarmer.com/

Music has been an important part of Clay’s life since before he can even remember. His earliest memories of music include attending church with his Grandmother. “Granny” as she is called by all those that knew her best, sparked a love for musical expression through gospel hymns sung at church and at home.

Clay remembers singing these gospel songs with his Granny and feeling a wonderful release of spirit. Sometimes he would forget the words and she encouraged him to make up his own. Clay’s interest in music continued to flourish listening to the popular music his parents enjoyed. They listened to Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, George Jones, Don Williams, Elvis, you get the idea.

Not straying far from his musical roots, Clay fuses the music of his childhood into a sound uniquely his own. His music is diverse, fresh and reflects the rich musical heritage of his native state of Texas. From country swing to rockin’ blues to folk ballads, his talent as a songwriter, vocalist, arranger, and performer will make you laugh, cry and dance.

Clay entertains fans of alternative country music all over the state of Texas and it is in the live venues that you will hear and see what we’re talking about. Clay released his debut self titled CD in July 2001 and has promoted it making numerous friends and fans along the way. He is currently promoting his current 11 track release, “Another Day”.

Saturday 23 November 2013 - Deep Ella * 33three * Soapbox Revolution (doors 9pm, music 9:30pm)

Deep Ella (Houston, TX)
https://deepella.com/

From the emotional well-spring of singer-songwriter Jeff Crowder, came the integral foundation for Houston-based artistic rock band, Deep Ella. With meaningful lyrics and organic melodies as the backbone of the project, the band released the record “Last Year’s New Thing,” in 2002. LYNT was characterized by a mix of diverse songs with a range of styles that embody the wavering passion of a progressive youth. Drawing together the experience of local success, consistent gigs, and a loyal fan base, the band began tinkering in the studio, using a few EPs to mold their sound. Deep Ella spent the better part of 2006 holed up in Helberg House, the band’s home studio, working on their sophomore album “Empty Seas and Memories.” The devotion of a decade paid off. Building on their talents, Deep Ella perfected an intricate mix of lusty vocals, aggressive guitar work and eclectic rhythms. The momentum of the “Empty Seas” release in 2007 allowed the band to explore regionally, supporting national acts like Blue October, Civil Twilight and the Paper Tongues. Deep Ella is set to release their much anticipated third album “You.me.and the Spider,” July 17, 2010. Produced by bassist Matt Noevesky, of Blue October, “You.me.and the Spider” is the culmination of a colorful vision of seasoned artists dedicated to transcending the sphere of modern rock.

33three (Nashville, TN)
https://www.facebook.com/33three

33:three members Carson Murphy and Aaron Smith found their beginnings at Belmont University playing bass and drums together for various shows and recording sessions. When they discovered that they could not only groove, but that they also share a love of composition and instrumental expression, they began collaborating on their first acoustic album, featuring Carson on acoustic guitar and Aaron on piano and percussion. The resulting product, Six String Narrative, is a blend of catchy rhythms and chord progressions overlaid by beautiful melodies that speak to a realm of the soul deeper than words.

The desire of 33:three is to call listeners aside from life’s busy cycle for just a moment, in order to take in the rich emotional truth conveyed through the singing of the instruments. Each musical piece tells a story or paints an image that captures a moment of emotional truth, ranging anywhere from the simplicity of a joyful smile to the elaborate saga of Christ’s death and resurrection. The name “33:three” is a reference to the book of Psalms, which calls for originality, skillfulness, and purity of expression from worshipers. 33:three aims to inspire listeners through music to foster these traits in their own lives and personal expression.

Friday 22 November 2013 - Pegstar presents Dead Confederate * Equals

Dead Confederate (Athens, GA)
https://www.deadconfederate.com/

For the uninitiated, Dead Confederate is a five-piece rock band from Athens, GA whose music runs the gamut of infectious psychedelia to a uniquely southern and ferocious dirge. Although, placing labels on a band like this is rather pointless as their sound seems a constant and fluid evolution; they never seem content with abiding by the guides of one sub-genre, so maybe it’s best we just leave it at “rock” for simplicity’s sake. Dead Confederate, in name and sound, formed in 2006 in Atlanta, GA before moving to Athens shortly thereafter. In these six years, the band has become one of the most revered live acts in the nation by fans and peers alike. Touring relentlessly in the US and overseas, they’ve been handpicked to join a number of their musical heroes on the road (REM, Dinosaur Jr, Meat Puppets… to name a few) and play some rather high-profile gigs (Bonnaroo to Bumbershoot, SXSW and CMJ, Late Night with Conan O’Brien… also to name a few). Dead Confederate has released two full-length records to-date, 2008’s “Wrecking Ball” and 2010’s “Sugar”, as well as two EP’s, a live album, and an eighteen-song compilation of home recordings. Their third full-length, “In The Marrow”, will be making it’s long-anticipated appearance on April 16, 2013 via Spiderbomb Records/ Redeye.

Equals (Austin/San Marcos/Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/equalstexas

The Texas-based band, Equals, hasn’t always been the technical and tightly-arranged instrumental band it is now. The band’s large soundscapes, searing guitar riffs and blitzing rhythms were products of evolution.

The members of Equals-bassist Alex Guzman; drummer Matt Toman; keyboardist Logan Wexler; and guitarists Simon McDonald and Dylan Storey-met in high school and college and began playing in several different projects that were musically diverse before fine-tuning their sound into a heavier, more cinematic approach. “When we first started playing in bands, the music always came about through improvising and then we decided that we wanted to have a band that was more composition-driven and wanted to create music with simplicity, more focused on the ambience and the sonic palette than anything else,” said Toman. “Once we started figuring out how to apply a lot of the feeling and textures of ambient music, our music started progressing.”

After a year of writing and gigging around Central Texas, they were able to hone their sound and write a collection of songs that would become their self-titled debut EP. The album was recorded by the band themselves in various homes and studios with Alex Bhore (This Will Destroy You) mixing and acclaimed mastering engineer Alan Douches (Animal Collective, Sufjan Stevens) at the helm. The result is an energetic and technical composition filled with densely layered sounds, sharp-drum fills and attention-grabbing guitar parts. Every song plays like a mini-opus that charters new territory with each song. With influences from Tortoise, Maserati, Mercury Program or the more affable comparisons to Battles, the band continues to refine their sound and leave plenty of room to breathe, but shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon.

“…BooTown’s totally amazing, super original and completely hilarious show, Grown-Up Storytime.”
~ Lydia O’Neil of Examiner.com

“BooTown’s a party!”
~Salvador Chevez

“When “Karen” was experimenting with prostitution, BooTown’s Emily Hynds told all about it. When humans-cum-rowdy-kitties unleashed their inner macho ghetto, BooTown listened. And when “John” saw a red-haired vagina for the first time, it was BooTown that captured his testimony. How has Houston survived without BooTown’s monthly “Grown-up Storytime” comedy bash?” - Joel Luks, Houston Culture Map
