Saturday, June 28, 2014 - The Hormones * The Guillotines * Poor Dumb Bastards * The Velostacks

The Hormones (Austin, TX)
https://www.reverbnation.com/timnapalm

Return of classic ’90s Austin punk band The Hormones! Tim “Napalm” Stegall, 3 new guys, same 3 chords!

“…a twin-barrel shot of old-school zoom-punk, like Fear mudwrestling The Heartbreakers.”
David Fricke - Rolling Stone

“When writer/rocker Tim “Napalm” Stegall returned to town in 2012, it wasn’t just to resume his duties as a Chron gadfly. He also reactivated the Hormones, Austin’s burning punk outfit from 1993 to 1998. Leading a new gathering of misfits, Stegall preps aural fireworks like the classic “Sell Out Young” for the quartet’s first local show in 15 years….”
Michael Toland - The Austin Chronicle

“…the Hormones’ output stacks up quite nicely against that of their local punk preservationist contemporaries, and the key factor is the budding songwriting skill of singer/guitarist Tim Stegall. Songs like “Sell Out Young” and “No Fun in the Modern World” scream with obvious pop constructions, but differ in Stegall’s sneering, Johnny Rotten-by-way-of-South-Texas approach to singing and his uncanny knack for crafting guitar solos that don’t smother the song, not to mention requisite concern for melody from the band as a whole.”
Greg Beets - The Austin Chronicle

The Guillotines (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Guillotines/392228790871021

The Guillotines were founded by Robert Conn on guitar (The Pagans, The Defnics, The Plague, AK-47′s) and co-founder and wife Jewels (Chelsea Hotel) on bass. Since the band’s inception, their only goal was to play the same loud, fast, and furious punk rock ‘n’ roll they helped create during the original punk movement in the 70′s. The band is rounded with Marc Munroe (The Hot Things) on drums and Pablo Ono (Electric Frankenstein, Texas Terri Bomb, The Hot Things, BlackNovas, Die Cobra) on guitar. Their music is pure and unapologetic and their live shows are an aural assault on your senses. Want to more? Just ask or go to a show!

Poor Dumb Bastards (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Poor-Dumb-Bastards/126350582202

PDB was formed in March 1991 by long time hetero life partners and musical collaborators, Mike Porterfield and Byron Dean. The initial interest was to find a means to get into Emo’s for free, later they discovered Emo’s was always free. Drawing on their collective influences and experiences from some of their earlier work, bands like Cretinoid, Plutonium Flatheads and the Byron Weird Group, Mike and Byron set out create a genre all their own, hence “Texas Drunk Rock” was born. Add the non bass playing talents of Steve Scholtes and the competent, metronomic drumming of Chi Chi Macoola, and PDB were able to carve their initials on the bathroom door of the Texas music scene. Through the many years and many lineup changes, but these Ill-minded sewer rockers have stayed true to their founding principals. POWER, PERFORMANCE, PERVERSION

Friday 27 June - Monkeysoop * Dogz on Parole * Vanity Crimes * Piss Poor

Monkeysoop (San Antonio, TX)
https://www.monkeysoop.com/

Monkeysoop is a musical group of experimetal pioneers. Unfulfilled by the structures and rhythms available in much of today’s pop, rock and metal music, guitarist Jerry Connor writes without conforming to any guidelines other than the wilds of his warped imagination. Unique mixes of musical styles, time signatures, and extraordinary guitar melodies and riffs put you on an auditory and emotional roller coaster that is the band’s ‘experimetal’ music. “Monkeysoop . . . balances earnestness, speed and all-out technical ability with playfulness and soaring imagination,” says Jim Beal, Jr., from the San Antonio Express News.

With bandmates Erica Missey on drums and, most recently, Harold Young on bass, Jerry Connor and Monkeysoop have been going strong since 2003. The band signed in 2012 with Tate Music Group and just released its sixth CD, GREY MATTER, in October, 2013.

Previously, Monkeysoop was signed with Sonic Wave International, Inc., through which they have released five CDs since 2004; EXPERIMETAL II, EXPERIMETAL, NUNS’ NIGHT OUT, COUNTERCLOCKWISE, and MONKEYSOOP. These CDs are available at major internet retailers.

The group is sponsored by Analysis-Plus, Inc., GuitarHeads Pickups, Sleek Guitars, Pic Stick, Curt Mangan, Fast Axe, Coffin Case, Star Access Entertainment, and Furman.

Monkeysoop has had the honor of guest appearances by drummer extraordinaire Terry Bozzio and guitar slinger Michael Angelo Batio on their 2012 release, EXPERIMETAL II.

Monkeysoop received Grammy consideration in 2005 for “Best Rock Performance.”

The band was honored as the “BEST NEW INTERNATIONAL BAND” for the “MYSPACE HALL OF FAME”, Class of 2010.

Monkeysoop’s music is featured in the television series “The Drive TV”.

The band is honored to have toured with and opened for many national international musical acts.

The funds earned from Monkeysoop’s song “Kendall” go to aid the American Heart Association.

Dogz On Parole (Houston, TX)
https://dogzonparole.com/

With a blend of influences, Dogz on Parole is like a unique recipe. All the ingredients come together to form the sound and fell of the band. The band never set out to be sound Punk or sound like Metal. We just are, what ever comes out and we think sounds good becomes ours.

The band believes in helping other bands out, we’ve had enough of the mentality of being in competition with each other. Mu…sic is a universal language that is understood through-out the entire world no matter the spoken language in a country. The is enough room for all of us in music. Let’s put an end to the bitterness. Support local bands! Support the unsigned, we are the future.

Gone are the days of the big record labels having the power to filter us and only allow what they thought was good enough to sell. Let the people be the judge!

Vanity Crimes (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/VanityCrimes

We are a rock n roll band from Houston, TX! We are the sleeze and glitter that you have been waiting for!
This is a band who loves to rock, and loves obscure music from different eras. This band has potential to make a name as it stands out drastically from the sound of other local bands making Vanity Crimes a name we know you’ll remember.

Vanity Crime is a four piece that lives in an era when the music was big, loud, original, and most of was created by playing actual instruments. Vanity Crimes is trying to bring back the sleezin’ and pleasin’ of the Sunset Strip, where big hair and eyeliner ruled the world. Do not expect us to look like your average band, we are that little bit of glitter that was left over in the gutter from the days that reminds you of freedom and the love of rock n roll.

Wednesday 25 June 2014 - Johnwayneisdead * Haksaw Man * The Bloody Von Erichs ( doors 8pm)

Johnwayneisdead (Houston, TX)

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Johnwayneisdead/398255826928236

made up of jw from Letters to Voltron and Kris Jett of The Be Sharps comes an acoustic punk/garage duo that combines darkly heartfelt themes with catchy hooks, and a beat you can dance to.

Haksaw Man (Houston, TX)

https://www.facebook.com/HaksawMan

The story of Haksaw Man is a strange one. It all began with too many beers, when the Wolf asked Buck Velvet what if…? What if Leather face slung a guitar as well as he slung a chainsaw? What if a werewolf could play drums? What if Frankenstein played bass? Well, in early 2010 Buck Velvet and The Wolf started Haksaw Man. They began writing songs with a love for horror movies, Texas, and rock-n-roll. But the boys needed someone on bass to round out the trio.and, as luck would have it, an old friend, Little George came back to town. Before long Haksaw Man was taking their music to the darkest, seediest bars, and beer joints in Texas. And, every time they played they were a little louder, rocked a little harder, and were making people howl at the moon. The boys aren’t fond of being called, well, anything. But some have called them garage-rock, blues-rock, surf-rock, punk-rock, rock-a-billy, and a host of other things not fit to repeat. Well, the boys figure they might as well name their music after two of the things they love. The things that started started all this… Horror Rock.

The Bloody Von Erichs (Houston, TX)

https://www.thebloodyvonerichs.com/

Met Dutch in a bar and asked if he’d like to start a new project because the earlier band had dissolved. Then we had a couple of drummers, singers, guitarists that didn’t fly. So me (Brent) and Dutch decided to record anyway with our old drummer (Roland Bustos) and Jerald played on a couple of songs too. Now we want to gig but needed a new drummer. Jake Hard was brought on and we decided that a 3-piece would be just what we need to play live and sound heavy as ever……… but then we decided to add another guitarist so we brought in Dutch’s son Daniel “Switch Von Erich” to round out our sound.

Monday 23 June 2014 - Brief Lives (feat. Valient Thorr’s Valient Himself) * HogLeg * Funeral Horse (doors 8pm)

Brief Lives (Washington, DC)

https://brieflives.bandcamp.com/

Good news, fellow Thorriors: Valient Thorr’s frontman and spiritual leader has joined the Richmond, VA post-hardcore band Brief Lives! Even without knowing anything about Brief Lives prior to this moment, I think we can all agree that Himself’s electric stage presence and unmistakable vocals instantly make this band better. You know what I’m talkin’ about??? ” - metalsucks.net

“…an angular-yet-melodic blast of DC-inspired punk rock, weaving themselves deftly amidst sinewy rhythms and jagged riffs. Brief Lives never looses sight of a solid hook though, and its foundation is built upon infinitely captivating song structures and a propulsive backbone that’s always moving things forward at a snappy pace. Whistleblower is unquestionably a must listen for fans of Jawbox, Quicksand and Bluetip.” - absolutepunk.net

Hogleg (Houston, TX)
No website at this time

New band featuring members for Dixie Waste, Poor Dumb Bastards and Born Again Virgins.

Funeral Horse (Houston, TX)
https://funeralhorse.bandcamp.com/

“…what you mostly need to know about Funeral Horse and this album is that on the very first song they create an opus which could outdo a number of full length albums by other bands claiming to rock.” - Joshua Macala – Raised by Gypsies

“… the band I’m most interested to check out is newcomers Funeral Horse, which formed out of the ashes of the gone-too-soon Art Institute; they’re heavy and sludgy and slow as hell, dwelling somewhere in the realm of High on Fire or Sleep, and that’s no bad place to be.” - Jeremy Hart – Space City Rock

““We’re heavy and slow… so is our music”, this sayeth their facebook page. I can’t comment on the guys themselves, but their music certainly does live up to the claim. Funeral Horse currently have a new EP available for free download with tape copies (Tapes! Love it!) available shortly. They certainly live up to the hype. In fact, the first two words that spring to my mind listening to it are, indeed, “heavy” and “slow” – but not ponderously so. I can almost picture swathes of people with hair over their eyes, wearing black/tie-dyed clothes and nodding slowly to the beat like a crowd of metal zombies. With beer in their hands.” - Iain Purdie – Moshville Times

“There’s a cassette version of Savage Audio Demon available, which I would like to get his clammy paws on. This type of angling shows what kind of band Houston’s Funeral Horse is – vintage, loving those 70’s, and in bed with thick, rocked-up riffs, and vocals with plenty of ominous echo. The bluesy “Scatter My Ashes Over the Mississippi” is the pick of the bunch here (nice dynamics), but don’t leave “Invisible Hand of Revenge” out in the cold either. Rocking stuff.” - David E. Gehlke – Dead Rhetoric

Saturday 21 June 2014 - Gypsyhawk * Venomous Maximus * The Secret Prostitutes

Gypsyhawk (Los Angeles, CA)
https://www.facebook.com/Gypsyhawkusa

“Gypsyhawk is four metal dudes playing rock and roll and bringing the party every time they get on stage,” states former guitarist Andrew Packer, and there is perhaps no better way of surmising the spirit and sound of the Pasadena quartet. Revisiting the electrifying sounds of bullshit-free 70s rock, the band are a breath of fresh air compared to the endless onslaught of breakdown obsessed bands cluttering up heavy music. Marinating their wares in whiskey and weed, they hurl out blistering riffs and irresistible hooks and grooves, doing their damnedest to ensure that everyone at their shows is having as much fun as they are. With Revelry & Resilience, their second full-length and Metal Blade debut, this vibe bleeds from the speakers from start to finish, determinedly putting a smile on your face and compelling you to throw your hair around, no matter how much or how little you might have. “It’s music for girls to shake their asses to and dudes to bang their heads,” states vocalist/bassist Eric Harris. “It’s good-time rock and roll, and we don’t take ourselves too seriously, but at the same time we’re not one-dimensional ‘yeah-dude-let’s-party-all-the-fucking-time!’ guys, and I like to think there’s something for everyone in our music.”

If one thing is for sure it’s that the four guys in Gypsyhawk are not looking for overnight stardom and want to put the work into building something that lasts, and deservedly so. “I really want to take this band as big as it can possibly go but because it’s good music that people want to hear, and I want the chance to try different things on the records we make in the future, to really see what we’re capable of,” says Packer. “We’re just going to write the best music that we can and we’re gonna write the truest music that we can,” Harris adds. “We want to play this music everywhere that will have us, but we’re pretty realistic about everything, and we’re just having a good fucking time while we can.”

Venomous Maximus (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/VenomousMaximus

Houston’s Venomous Maximus gurgles with the sounds of proto-metal gods Pentagram and Blue Cheer as well as new-school leaders like High on Fire. The headspace of this band falls somewhere between a Alejandro Jodorowsky film and a New Orleans voodoo den. Hail Satan and pass the chicken feet.

Bands we’ve played with: High on Fire, Mastodon, Pentagram, Eyehategod, Fu Manchu, The Sword, Valiant Thorr, Red Fang, deadhorse, Royal Thunder, Tombs, Early Man, Torche, Honky, Dixie Witch, Black Cobra, Priestess, Black Tusk, Bison BC, Dead Meadow, Green and Wood, Gypsyhawk, Suplecs, Ancient VVisdom

Secret Prostitutes (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Secret-Prostitutes/406440782699278

“The Secret Prostitutes, led by drummer Adit Samudra with Wolf on guitar and Ryan on bass, play something like the antithesis of the distended and psychologically complex music of the Energy. Aptly titled, Never Mind the K.B.D. consists of D.I.Y. punk in the style of the Killed By Death compilations, with simple, direct riffs arranged into fast, very short songs, 22 of which are dispatched in just over 25 minutes. A.D.D. indeed. Samudra has a knack for the punk technique of crafting catchy vocal lines without the use of melody, with songs like “Sabotase Barang Bukti” and “Hipnotis,” both of which feature Samudra’s sister on vocals, serving as prime examples…Confoundingly, one of the things that distinguishes the Secret Prostitutes, the fact that Samudra writes in Indonesian, limits the impact of the songs for an English-speaking audience. Not that Samudra doesn’t have every right and reason to write lyrics in whatever language he chooses, but this particular choice does limit the access of most American listeners to the content of the songs.” -29.95.com
