Tuesday 29 September 2015 - Houligan Collective Presents: The Parasites * Something Fierce * Mutant Love * The Turnaways

The Parasites (Livingston, NJ)
https://www.facebook.com/OfficialParasites

The Parasites formed in New Jersey in the late 80’s, with Dave Parasite joining Ron Nole and Dave Ross, who had previously played together in NJ Ramones-core band, The
Accelerators. In 1992, shortly after their first album on Shredder Records was released, Dave relocated to California, and continued the Parasites with a new lineup.

During the Parasites’ stay in California, the Parasites toured non-stop. They have played with Green Day, Rancid, NOFX, Bad Religion, The Buzzcocks, Jawbreaker, The Queers,
The Mr. T Experience, The Ataris, Squirtgun, Avail, and thousands of other bands. The Parasites have released the “Pair Of Sides”, “Punch Lines” and “Pair” CDs on Shredder
Records, the “Rat Ass Pie”, “Compost”, and “Retro Pop Remasters” CDs on Go-Kart Records, the “Nyquil Fueled Rock Armada” CD on Wingnut Records, and thier version of
the classic Ramones “It’s Alive” LP for the Clearview Records series of Ramones cover LPs that also included Screeching Weasel, The Vindictives, The Queers, MTX and Boris The
Sprinkler. The “Punch Lines”, “Pair”, and “Nyquil Fueled Rock Armada” CDs were also released on vinyl by Munster Records in Spain.

After taking a break in late 2003, and later moving back to New Jersey, Dave restarted the Parasites in early 2006. Go Kart Records released “Retro Pop Remasters”, a Parasites best of CD later that year, and the Parasites toured the US with New Jersey band The Ergs both backing Dave, and also playing an Ergs set. Dave Parasite also recently released “Pop
Punk’s Not Dead”, an international compilation CD, in 2007 on Go Kart Records. Next up is the Go Kart release of “It’s Alive” remastered and on CD for the first time, to be followed by two new Parasites CDs to be recorded this fall. Remastered extended versions of the out of print Shredder Records CDs are also forthcoming.

It’s simple - The Parasites are one of the longest running and most influential Pop Punk bands ever. They helped define the genre, and never changed their sound to fit the latest
trend. They’ve released 8 albums, 20 singles, and have songs on more compilations than you can count. They’ve done 16 tours, and played nearly 1000 shows all over the US,
Europe and Japan. Pop Punk bands from all over the US, Europe, and Japan have recorded covers of Parasites songs. The Parasites have done a lot, however, here’s two things the
Parasites haven’t done: sell out, or give up.

Something Fierce (Houston, TX)
https://www.somethingfiercemusic.com/

Something Fierce is a three-piece punk/pop band from Houston, Texas whose music combines the sound and attitude of first-wave 1977 punk with an energy and outlook that’s thoroughly contemporary, updating the attack of the Clash and the Buzzcocks for the 21st century.

Something Fierce were founded in 2005 by guitarist and lead vocalist Steven Garcia (ex-Gun Crazy and Born Liars) and bassist and vocalist Niki Sevven (formerly with the Neckbreakers); the group went though several drummers before teaming up with Andrew Keith, who they recognized from his frequent presence at local shows and parties.

In 2006, Something Fierce recorded their debut album, Come for the Bastards, which they released themselves. The release was followed by frequent touring through the Southwest, with occasional road trips into the South and Midwest; they group also recorded a handful of 7″ releases, including a split single with the Hangouts. In 2008, Something Fierce released their second full-length album, There Are No Answers; while the first pressing of the album was distributed by the band itself, the Portland, Oregon-based punk label Dirtnap Records liked the disc and reissued it after signing the band in 2009.

The band continued to tour extensively and released a 7″ on Action Town Records in 2010 before recording their third album, Don’t Be So Cruel, in 2011. The third album found Something Fierce’s sound evolving in a more sophisticated, pop-influenced direction without losing sight of their punk roots. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Saturday 26 September 2015 - The Secret Group Presents: Throwing Shade (doors 8pm)

Throwing Shade (Los Angeles, CA)
https://www.throwingshade.com/

Throwing Shade is a smart, hilarious and irreverent weekly podcast and web series, hosted by homosensual Bryan Safi and feminasty Erin Gibson. Every week, Bryan and Erin take a look at all the headlines in politics and pop culture, and treat them with much less respect than they deserve. It’s just like a cocktail party with your smart, silly friends who can seamlessly connect a conversation about Miley Cyrus and weave it seamlessly into thoughts on Hillary’s unconfirmed run for President. They can jump from “True Detective” to “The Bachelor” and in one breath explain how Drake is the Loretta Lynn of the R&B world. Throwing Shade is infotainment at its best, serving an audience that represents more than half of all living human beings who don’t have a show that speaks directly to them. The AV Club calls them “equal opportunity offenders who lack any sort of filter” and Rolling Stone magazine put them on their list of “The 20 Best Comedy Podcasts” earlier this year. Throwing Shade is a part of the Maximum Fun network, and is also a weekly web series produced and hosted by Will Ferrell’s comedy website Funny or Die.

Thursday 24 September 2015 - American Pin Up (Altercation Records) * Freakabouts * Refinery Coast

American Pin Up (White Plains, NY)
https://www.americanpinup.net/

American Pinup emerged from the suburban sprawl of Westchester County, New York in 2010 to offer a rousing blend of punk rock and powerpop with seasoned songwriting at its core. Thoughtfully arranged compositions and lyrical depth bolster the band’s radio-ready, exuberant indie rock sound. Fronted by Lauren West, who unites sultry, melodic crooning with a raspy, rock and roll growl, the band draws on influences from across the spectrum of alternative music, creating an explosive mixture of pop-savvy melody and punk rock attitude. The result is the perfect marriage of hook and edge.

Following two full-length albums and two EPs, multiple nation-wide tours, and countless appearances at festivals such as Vans Warped Tour, The Fest, and SXSW since their arrival on the scene, American Pinup has carved out their own niche in the world of independent music. A tireless, DIY work ethic paired with undeniably infectious tracks and electrifying live shows has propelled the quartet from obscurity to earning a coveted place on theAlternative Press list of “100 Bands You Need To Know” in 2014.

American Pinup will be hitting the road again this fall in support of their new release “The Radio EP.”

“Change Machine is full of songs that could stay with you if you let them in. Remember when pop wasn’t a dirty word and a band like Blondie was catchy, but also dared to examine experimental rock as well? American Pinup write songs with depth, heart, and a direct link to punk rock.”
Morgan Evans - New Noise Magazine

“[Lauren West] has quickly become one of the most captivating frontwomen in the biz.”
Amy Wright - AMP Magazine

“American Pinup run through a multitude of rock genres in their quest to expand their sound… The peppy quartet have no problem being music shape-shifters… ‘A New America’… [is] a sing-along folk-punk song with ample amounts of swagger and heart.”
100 Bands You Need To Know - Alternative Press

“[I]t is a sure bet that if you have not yet heard of American Pinup you soon will. It’s also a good bet that front gal Lauren West may just become the voice of the new decade.”
Brian Shea - AMP Magazine

“[T]his band is the real deal all the way… This live take sounds every bit as good as the studio version. And it’s very clear that Lauren West’s powerhouse voice requires no technological enhancement! I should add that the lyrics to this song completely blew my mind. If one of the major objectives of [The Prava Sessions] is to feature bands with actual talent, then American Pinup is a perfect fit.”
Lord Rutledge - Faster and Louder - Review: American Pinup, “The Prava Sessions”

Freakabouts (Lincoln, NE)
https://www.freakabout.com/

Sometimes a name perfectly sums up the personality and sound of a band. When you hear the music or see the band live, it just makes sense.

FREAKABOUT hails from the bright lights of Lincoln, NE. Migrating from all corners of the state, the band united in early 2011 and has been going full throttle ever since. Fronted by Cortney Kirby, a vocalist reminiscent of the greats of the classic rock era, the band thrusts you into a groove and doesn’t let up. FREAKABOUT makes your body move with aggressive dueling guitar and bass blues-rock riffs and drumming that keeps you guessing as to what will happen next.

Guitarist Aaron Galvan, bassist Alex Drvol and drummer Zach Zoellner lock in to a ground shaking drive that makes Cortney’s soulful melodies soar above and take over a room.

With their first full-length album “Don’t We All” the band proves just how talented and dynamic they can be. Influences from across the music spectrum come together as the sum of their parts blend into heart-pounding rock and passion-filled lyrics that give each song a life of its own. To experience FREAKABOUT is to experience joy, fun, darkness, fear, rebellion and euphoria all at once.

It’s not just a motto, it’s a lifestyle: Don’t freak out, FREAKABOUT!

“FREAKABOUT is made of characters, rather than band members. There’s Kirby, the spunky lead vocalist who can work the crowd. Zoellner is “Nebraska’s Travis Barker,” as Kirby put it, with his over-the-top drumming. Galvan gets in the zone, and when he does, “gold” exudes from his instrument. And Drvol uses his talent to perform whatever his bandmates throw out at him…” - Jourdyn Kaare (Daily Nebraskan)

Refinery Coast (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/refinerycoastmusic

Refinery Coast is a knock-down, drag-out blend of punk, ska, and Southeast Texas flavorings. From all over Houston, Texas, the members are seasoned and skilled musicians seeking to leave their best on the stage every time they perform, and Refinery Coast is the result. The overall aim of the band was to shine a light on an otherwise oft-overlooked facet of the Texas music scene, and Refinery Coast succeeds in doing exactly that. Be it balls-to-the-wall punk à la Offspring, or that skank’d sound that recalls Less Than Jake, or something in between, it’s all here. You’ve just gotta listen for it.

Tuesday 22 September 2015 - Adam Bricks * Ryan Sambol Band * Dollie Barnes

Adam Bricks (Houston, TX)
https://adambricks.tumblr.com/

Houston Songwriter by way of New York has been writing songs about city love and lust since his first release, “City Songs” in 2013. Since he has opened for the likes of Justin Townes Earle, David Dondero and Houston Local favorites Buxton. He is currently working on his new record with members of local indie rockers The Caldwell, set to be released in early 2016 entitled “Relations”

“Adam Bricks looks like another heir to Houston’s tradition of talented storytellers packing acoustic guitars. City Songs, the Bellaire High School grad’s brand-new full-length album, is a ramshackle yet tuneful suite of songs dedicated to Houston itself, and flashes bits of rootsy charm and pop smarts.” – Chris Gray (Houston Press)

Adam Bricks has a fascinating voice. Not a “pretty” voice, mind you. It’s casual and conversational but not lacking color. He sometimes sings a bit behind the beat, which gives his songs a sauntering feeling that is warm and inviting. He has a brilliant collection of new tunes called “City Songs” that puts that voice and his lyrics in a roomy setting that never once leans toward excess, even when he dials in the brass. He’s bright with a lyric, too, and more than occasionally funny as well as poignant as he is in one of my favorite lines: “I’ve been as lonely as a fish in a tank.” – Andrew Dansby (Houston Chronicle)

Ryan Sambol Band (San Francisco, CA)
https://www.punctumrecords.com/ryansambol/

Ryan Sambol began his career in Texas at an early age with a group called The Strange Boys, who, over three albums in five years, enjoyed moderate success and cut their teeth over two continents. With a chance to take a break, Ryan recorded his first solo album, Now Ritual, while living in San Francisco.

Two years later, Ryan reemerged with the group Living Grateful, only to take a break upon the completion of the album Peace Mob and, predictably to those close to him, has now returned to embark on a solo career a long time in the making. He is currently working on his second solo album, so far entitled Rail Sing.

Dollie Barnes (Houston, TX)
https://www.dolliebarnes.com/

Dollie Barnes is singer/songwriter from Houston, TX. Occasionally she plays solo, but most often with her full-band featuring pop/rock sounds.
