Sunday, January 31, 2016 - Pegstar and New Noise Magazine Presents : Black Tusk & Royal Thunder with special guests Bask, Blues Funeral

Black Tusk (Savannah, GA)
https://www.facebook.com/BlackTusk/

Black Tusk was born from sweat. There was blood, and maybe a few tears, too, but more than anything, it was sweat that marked the earliest years of Savannah, Georgia’s Black Tusk. Formed in 2005 by three lifelong friends—bassist Jonathan Athon, guitarist Andrew Fidler, and drummer James May—the band welded together a three-pronged vocal attack, dirty punk, sludgy heavy metal, and a big fat dose of Motorhead to create what they called “swamp metal.” The name stuck, and the sound spread as they hit the ground running and toured hard on their first EP, 2005’s rough’n’ready When Kingdoms Fall. They kept up a manic pace, recording two more demos (2006’s untitled demo and 2007’s The Fallen Kingdom. Hyperrealist signed on to release their 2008 debut LP, 2008’s Passage Through Purgatory, and 2009 saw them churn out a trio of splits with the likes of The Holy Mountain, ASG, and Fight Amp. Soon after that, the heavyweights at Relapse Record came calling.

The Philadelphia-based label and the band formed a partnership that lasts to this day, first collaborating on their 2010 breakthrough Taste the Sin and then on their highly-anticipated 2011 follow-up, Set the Dial. Since then, they’re released a pair of EPs—2013’s Tend No Wounds and the digital-only 2014 EP Vulture’s Eye—and kept pounding the pavement in the United States, Europe, and the UK alongside bands like Red Fang, Kvelertak, Down, Municipal Waste, Fu Manchu, Inter Arma, Intronaut, and so many others, as well as being hand-picked to appear on Metallica’s Orion Festival in 2012.

In 2014, they hit the studio with their old friend and accomplished audio engineer, Joel Grind, to get back to work on a new album that is now slated for release in early 2016. Before they could get their new record into stores and jump back up in their big white tour van, though, the band suffered a setback beyond what most could even imagine.

In November 2014, mere weeks before the band was due to kick off their biggest tour yet, Athon was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident. Several days later, on November 9, 2014, he passed away at the age of 31, leaving behind hundreds of friends, family members, and his beloved dog Cutter as well as his brothers in Black Tusk. Support poured in from fans, friends, and fellow musicians from around the world; stunned, Andrew and James laid down their instruments and tried to process the loss. For a few weeks, the band’s future was uncertain, but ultimately, the remaining duo made the difficult decision to soldier on and carry on in Athon’s memory. Athon himself could have chosen no better successor than Corey Barhorst, a longtime friend and veteran musician who heads up his own project, Niche, and previously held down the low end for Kylesa. Barhorst initially joined the band as a live member in time for their European tour with Black Label Society, but after that, was welcomed into the fold as a full-blooded member of Black Tusk.

Black Tusk has lived through the kind of hardship and heartbreak that would cripple a lesser band, but it’s that dedication, and gumption, and pure bullheaded stubbornness that’s taken them around the world and as far away from the lacey Spanish moss and sweltering streets of Savannah than any of them could’ve dared dream. As of now, the band is readying the release of their new album which features Athon’s final recorded performance with his two brothers in arms. It will hurt to hear that roar of his ring out over Andrew’s riffs and James’ thunder, but it’ll be a good hurt: it means that part of him will always live on, just as the band he and his best friends founded a decade ago lives on. As Andrew, James, and now Corey hit the road to support this latest album and share a beer or three with the fans who stuck by them through it all, they’ll keep that memory alive, and keep taking care of business—and Taking Care of Black Tusk.

Royal Thunder (Atlanta, GA)
https://www.facebook.com/RoyalThunderMusic

ROYAL THUNDER are a four-piece rock band based out of Atlanta, Georgia that seamlessly blend the elements of heavy classic rock, 90’s grunge, and forward-thinking progressive rock. Propelled by the powerfully emotional voice of frontwoman Mlny Parsonz, the guitar heroics of Josh Weaver, and the dynamic drums of Evan Diprima, ROYAL THUNDER have been described by NPR as “a revved-up Southern hard-rock that howls like Led Zeppelin astride a psychedelic unicorn” and as “magnificently compelling rock music” by Decibel Magazine. Formed in 2004 by Weaver, his brother, and his best friend, the band went through several lineup changes over the years before settling on their current lineup, which also incorporated second guitarist Will Fiore as of 2015.

In 2007, ROYAL THUNDER self-released their debut EP and started touring with Jesse Stuber on drums. By 2010, Relapse Records took notice and signed the band, beginning with an official re-release of their self-titled EP then later releasing their 2012 full-length debut, CVI. Stuber left the band after CVI was complete, replaced by drummer Lee Smith. The band toured with Lee Smith and Josh Coleman (who also joined during the making of CVI on second guitar) for a few US tours. CVI was widely praised by critics, including Rolling Stone’s David Fricke, who said that Weaver’s playing has “the meaty, base elements of early-Seventies British blues” and Metal Hammer Magazine, who stated, “through the powerhouse vocals of Mlny Parsonz and a refusal to keep their sound boxed, Royal Thunder look set to be the underground’s next big breakout stars”. Other publications such as SPIN called the album “stunning” while Revolver Magazine described it as “essential” and The Guardian called the band “elegantly powerful,” and compared them to prime Led Zeppelin.

Since current drummer Diprima joined in October 2012, the band have been heavily touring the world, including full North American and European Tours with Baroness as well as prominent US tours alongside Monster Magnet, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Pallbearer, Enslaved, Corrosion of Conformity, O’Brother and many more. The group have also played high-profile festivals including SXSW, Bonnaroo, Scion Rock Fest, Bragg Jam, Roadburn, and numerous others. In a gap in their heavy touring schedule in 2013, the band recorded CVI: A, a set of acoustic renditions of three songs from CVI. ROYAL THUNDER then entered the studio once more in January of 2014 to begin their sophomore LP, Crooked Doors which was once again recorded, produced, and engineered by Joey Jones of Aria Recording Studio, with whom the band has a long standing working and personal relationship. Crooked Doors was released worldwide in April of 2015 via Relapse Records and has been praised by dozens of high-profile publications including Stereogum, The Guardian, and NPR, the latter of which called the Atlanta band “a modern master of hard-rock.” Though they’ve been around for ten years, ROYAL THUNDER seem to have only just hit their stride – the future stands to be even more uproarious than the band’s exciting early development.

Saturday 30 January 2016 - Pegstar presents: Marrow * Sima Cunningham (all ages, doors 8pm)

Marrow (Chicago, IL)
https://www.marrowmakesmusic.com/

The great institution that is “the Chicago music scene” has a new sound from some hometown faces. Over the last two years, Marrow has been searching in the studio and at many local Chicago venues for a sound they could call home. What stuck to the wall was a dynamic, honest and musically joyous interpretation of some rock songs. Sturdy, powerful lead vocals hailing from Macie Stewart (singer/songwriter/keyboardist) and Liam Kazar (singer/songwriter/guitarist) live at the center of every song; the frolicking yet frightful keys, industrious guitar, and impenetrable groove of bassist Lane Beckstrom and drummer Matt Carroll give these songs an impressively large sonic playground to gambol in.

Although a baby band full of young musicians (most members are 22), Marrow’s combined musical experience is extraordinary and wide-reaching. All hail from a jazz and classical background. Macie, Liam, and Lane spent four years touring the country and recording with the now defunct hip-hop outfit, Kids These Days, which fellow members included Vic Mensa and Donnie Trumpet. Macie toured with Chance The Rapper in 2014 and all four members of Marrow were featured on Surf, the new album from Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment. Liam spent the last year touring all over the U.S. and Europe with Tweedy, as well as performing on a slew of late night and daytime television programs: The Tonight Show, The Colbert Report, Conan, Austin City Limits, and CBS This Morning: Saturday.

In late 2013, Marrow released their debut, two-song EP, “TWO.” It was recorded in Lane’s basement just a few months after the band’s formation. The first song, “She Chose You,” shows someone wrestling with the torment and guilt that can sometimes consume a relationship and how that can both be sad and life-affirming — “she’s wrong it’s true, it’s not so bad.” In the second song, “Mother of Maladies,” we’re reminded of those great moments when you really don’t want to be around anyone else besides your lover — “Every night I am with you I feel it, every night’s not every night enough.”

Following the release of “TWO,” Marrow ventured into Liam’s brand new, never-before-used studio, Foxhall. It was a “learn as you go” process as the band made their first record in a studio’s maiden voyage – they grabbed all the foam or insulation they could find, scrapping together amplifiers, guitars and keyboards to try to find new sounds. What culminated, after a years worth of recording, experimentation and discovery, was the debut album from Marrow — The Gold Standard — a thoughtful, tender, rambunctious record.

Debut single “Paulson” is as fast-paced and fun as it is loud and energetic. “We won’t leave you feeling a certain way for very long,” says Liam. “At times you’ll want to curl into a ball or sit solemnly with headphones on like Lou Reed always wished we did when we listened to The Velvet Underground. Other times you’ll hear a song that just might make the next road trip playlist or maybe, just maybe, make you want to dance like no one’s watching.” As “Paulson” jumps of the cliff, it lands in the luscious, vast soundscape of the title track, “The Gold Standard,” the records most intense, daunting moment. Afterwards, the record continues to trot along with “Ocean of Glory” — “I am looking to see you at midnight, we don’t talk that much in the daylight. You could make love to me when I’m older, you’re a bootstrap I’m pulling closer.”

After “Ocean of Glory” finishes in its blitzed out frenzy of multiple drumsets, unified guitar and bass, and arpeggiating synthesizers, the record finds more sensitive moments with “Leave It On The Side,” “Leave Grounds Stay,” and “Cities.” In “Cities,” Macie sings, “our cities were built to be destroyed, otherwise we’d call them home.” Haunting strings performed by Macie give the record one of its most melancholic moments; a scary nightmare of what it would be like if our home was taken away from us.

The home stretch is hopeful and a suggestion of what is to come. With “Corsicana” we cleanse ourselves of the past and move on towards greener pastures. “I pack my bags, they barely closed, I’m on my way, we’ll see where I go…because nothing’s ever lost when your on own.” The record then comes to a close with “Quarter to Three,” the records most epic tune. Performing the song as it was intended — floating tempos and psychedelic jams for undisclosed periods of time. It’s the sound of four musicians and high school friends playing in a room together amidst the traditions bestowed upon them by the city of Chicago and it’s musical realm.

Sima Cunningham (Chicago, IL)
https://simacunningham.com/

Sima Cunningham has been on the Chicago music scene since her first album, Squeeze, which she recorded at age 15 with one of Chicago’s leading independent rock producers, Brian Deck. In high school, she performed and recorded with the rock group The Audians, but has since been traveling and performing with musicians in different countries around the world, including Venezuela, Armenia, and Ireland. In 2008, the Chicago Sun-Times recognized her as one of the “Women to Watch Under 30″ and music critic Jim Derogatis heralded her as “an incredibly powerful and self-assured performer, with a smoky, sexy voice.” In 2014, she self-released the wolf that eats the sheep, an EP recorded by Brian Deck at Minbal Studios in Chicago with celebrated Chicago musicians Dorian Gehring, Lane Beckstrom, Charles Rumback and Liam Kazar. In August 2014, Cunningham debuted her new experimental rock duo with Macie Stewart (of Marrow), called HOMME. The duo is releasing their first project in late 2015 and released the single “Fingerprints” in March.

2015 brought a number of new, exciting collaborations. In January, Cunningham was invited to lend background vocals to the Jeff Tweedy produced Richard Thompson album, Still, and performed with Thompson at the Solid Sound Festival in June. In March, she joined the Tweedy band (featuring Jeff Tweedy, Spencer Tweedy, Liam Kazar, Jim Elkington, and Darin Gray) for a month long U.S. tour as a vocalist. She also lent some vocals to the new Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment record, Surf, and joined Chance the Rapper and his band on stage for his headlining set at the 2015 Pitchfork Music Festival. She also performs as part of the indie-chamber group Passerines.

Cunningham also works as a music presenter. She hosts and curates a monthly singer-songwriter focused series called I Hear Voices at Chicago’s premiere venue for improvised and groundbreaking music, Constellation. For the past 8 summers, she has organized a small music and art festival, Postock, on a farm in Southern Wisconsin. She co-owns and manages a recording studio, Foxhall, where she is currently working on her new record with Chicago producer and engineer, Dorian Gehring.

We also have been known to host a homebrew competition where the grand prize is a chance to brew your recipe on our system. Our 2011 Pro-AM received such fanfare that we decided to add it to the group, and thus, Valkyrie was born.

Destroyer of Light (Austin, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/destroyeroflight

Formed in 2012 from constantly boiling musical cauldron that is Austin, TX, Destroyer of Light has taken a straight forward approach to tempering the disparate and harmonious parts of their influences into a total sum of slow motion tidal heaviness that bows to no altar but that of the riff. With the smoky flavors of hazed out doom and the stomping cadence of rock’s heyday, the band both tickles and deafens the ears with the theatrical flashes of Mercyful Fate, the ominous tones of Electric Wizard, and the ferociously feral feedback of a Sleep dirge.
