Saturday, March 26, 2016 - Lomelda * Golden Sombrero * Well Well (doors 8pm)

Lomelda (Waco, TX)
https://lomelda.net/

Lomelda is an art rock band from Waco, TX. Their sound features strong female vocals, loose spacey guitars, and intricate emotional percussion. Lead by the songwriting of Hannah Read, the group creates music that is both accessible and exploratory, nostalgic and challenging. Read’s simple guitar stylings range from mellow, woody rhythmic patterns to heavy droning textures, while the dynamic drumming of Zach Daniel adds weight to the subtleties of the songs.

Their live show lifts and lowers and invites you to lean in close. Feel something. Be patient. Get together. Take a heavy breath. Remember when you found a photo of your grandpa, your dad’s dad, the one you never met. He leans against the doorframe of the family cabin deep in the piney woods, a camera hanging around his neck, waiting to capture the kids’ model rocket launch but instead being captured himself, all denim and swagger at age 36, a year before his death. It’s gone — all of it. But you can still hold it in your hand. Or tear it up or burn it. Or frame it.

It’s nostalgic, heavy, and personal.
It’s popsensitive, soul drone, sentimental space rock.

Golden Sombrero (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/goldensombrerotx

“These recent Houston transplants make really really smart bar rock& roll with hints of honky tonk, classic rock bombast and ground zero NYC art-punk.” - B/CS Loud!Fest

Golden Sombrero originally formed during the summer of 2012 in Bryan/College Station as a new collaboration between members of other area bands such as Mike The Engineer, Pearl Light Specials, and The Ex-Optimists. From the beginning it has been a songwriter based project to make good tunes in loud garage rock setting. Original influences of the band included Deer Tick, The Replacements, and Neil Young’s work with Crazy Horse.
In 2013 the majority of the band moved to Houston and its sound further transformed. Bands like Superchunk, Love as Laughter, and Television started to influence the newer material, and country-rock vibes gave a bit of ground to pop hooks. The lineup went down to a 3-piece and then back to its original 4-piece, two guitar setup, but throughout the band has always been populated by friends.

Friday 25 March 2016 - Young Mammals, Pope, Buxton, Joe Mathlete (door 8pm)

Young Mammals (Houston, TX)
https://youngmammals.tumblr.com/

Despite all the racket in their pop, there is a quiet charisma that radiates from Young Mammals, something they may not even be aware of. The childhood friends of Cley Miller (guitar) and brothers Jose (bass) and Carlos Sanchez (vocals, guitar) have been have been making music together since middle school, first with an EP as The Dimes, then followed by Young Mammals’ full-length Carrots and two seven-inches. All modestly released, these records have hit hard for those lucky enough to come across them, resulting in invitations to play at CMJ, SXSW, Noise Pop, and Iceland Airwaves.

“from blustery power-pop to hushed art punk, with a youthful energy pushing equally through evocative guitar chords and gutsy vocals.” -Impose

” four energetic lads powering through some 90s-tinged indie with full-throttle intent so infectious every note I tried to take is complete scribble.” - New York Press

” full of atmospheric indie rock, in the vein of Broken Social Scene and the Flaming Lips. Pop melodies swirl with lush, reverb-heavy guitars. It’s noisy but not abrasive; a garage band melting in the summer heat.” - True Genius Requires Insanity

Pope (New Orleans LA)
https://www.facebook.com/popenola/

Born in the 90s. Never left. This New Orleans based 3 piece band started playing music together during their high school years together in Houston, Texas. Their close friendship translates into the music they create in that it feels simple, yet dense, layered, and mature. Alex Skalany and Matthew Seferian (guitar – Donovan Wolfington) share roles of guitar, bass, and lead vocals while Atticus Lopez provides a backbone of well structured drum parts. The final product is something that reflects influence from noise / grunge / pop bands such as superchunk and pavement, yet provides a fresh perspective that makes their musical project sound exciting and unique. We are way stoked to be releasing their debut full length “Fiction” on Tuesday March 10th on 500 clear / purple mix vinyl. Funeral Sounds Records will be releasing the tape. Stay tuned for the pre-order and the singles. We couldn’t stop listening to their EP in the veggie oil van while on tour this summer, so releasing their next effort was an obvious choice. - Community Records

Buxton (Houston, TX)
https://buxtonband.com/

Buxton’s forthcoming album, Half A Native, signals a departure from the rustic sound they have become known for and adds elements of indie rock, psychedelia, honky-tonk, ambience and distortion, resulting in their most realized album to date. Having enjoyed great success regionally in their hometown of Houston and throughout the South, the five-piece band decided to shake things up for this album and headed to Los Angeles to work with producer Thom Monahan (Devendra Banhart, Vetiver, Beachwood Sparks). From the dusty tones of guitar-slinging anthems to lonesome acoustic affairs that look outward and within, Half A Native is music for the search for home; the long journey to find somewhere, something, or someone that makes everything fall into place. Across 11 eclectic tracks Buxton ventures into vast sonic territories blanketed by singer-songwriter Sergio Trevino’s heart-clenched voice and melancholic, but optimistic lyrics. “We take from a lot of different genres and present it in a way that I think is most honest for us,” Trevino says.

Monday 21 March 2016 - Pegstar Presents: Astronauts Etc. * Harriet Brown (All ages)

Astronauts Etc. (Oakland, CA)
https://www.astronautsetc.net/

In another universe, the path of Astronauts, etc.’s Anthony Ferraro would have led him to become a classical musician - the culmination of nearly two decades of focused training. But as adventures go, each brings its own trials and it is the explorer’s duty to adapt.

It was while studying music at the University of California, Berkeley, that Anthony’s arthritis, diagnosed in childhood, began to affect his hands. No longer able to play etudes or concertos with the vigor they demanded, he dropped out of school and began to search for a new focus.

Soon, Ferraro began recording bedroom nocturnes under the moniker Astronauts, etc., a name he selected in reference to his reputation among friends as a space cadet with a tendency to let his mind wander wildly. But the handle also appeals appropriately to Ferraro’s sense of artistic adventure, finding excitement in the most far flung regions of his creative id.

Since breaking out in 2012 with the Hype Machine-topping “Mystery Colors” and “Coldboy,” followed by last year’s acclaimed Sadie EP, Astronauts, etc.’s new album Mind Out Wandering comes across as both a culmination of Ferraro’s quest and the beginning of something new.

The desire to explore other creative processes and solidification of his live band enabled this collection of songs to be recorded mostly live to tape through fully analog technology at Tiny Telephone in San Francisco. Blending thawed-out ’70s tones with sentiments of soul and echoes of modern indie guitar rock, Ferraro’s piano and Rhodes provide nearly as much a presence on each track as his own falsetto.

Ferraro describes this substantial and soulful set of earthy surrealist pop as chronicling a year’s journey of falling in love while trying to keep his mind in one piece. Lyrically he aimed to render his experience through an abstract lens, refracting the personal into shapes and shadows less recognizable. He points to a piano flurry in “Place With You” as a moment of losing his ego in psychedelic escape, while cutting the tape to abruptly end the exposed ballad “Control” articulates his propensity for self-sabotage. An oblique reference to The Graduate is found on album-closer “Upward Swing” where he asks after all this good that’s come, “What if she caught me on an upward swing?”

Ferraro’s introduction to the world of popular music was catalyzed by a serendipitous meeting with Chaz Bundick of Toro Y Moi in 2012, when Bundick walked into the cafe where he worked. Over the next year they struck up a creative friendship that eventually resulted in a spot for Ferraro in Bundick’s touring band. Encouragement and feedback from Bundick was instrumental in Ferraro’s choice to continue with Astronauts, etc., and inevitably Mind Out Wandering finds itself nodding occasionally to the funk-laced rhythms that Toro Y Moi has come to be known for.

With poetic juxtaposition, Ferraro’s time immediately after recording Mind Out Wandering last fall was shared with a group of art-focused hackers. He was adopted by the crew as its resident musician and traveled with them around the country while designing a unique piece of music-making code called Hypothetical Beats. That algorithm was recently included in the Smithsonian Design Museum’s Algorithm Auction, the world’s first auction celebrating the art of code. Ferraro’s seemingly incongruous leap from analog to algorithm is a function of his creative restlessness and desire to chart as many territories as he can.
