Ready for some reprieve from the blistering heat of summer? Well, Fat Wreck Chords has the solution: a cool sonic script called Move Like a Ghost from the California combotoyGuitar! On the heels of their first full-length—In This MesstoyGuitar continue to ride a massive wave of acclaim with the brand new EP, Move Like a Ghost. The band is built on the sunny vocals of Jack Dalrymple (whom you know and love from his long tenure in Swingin’ Utters), who dragged his Utters cohort Miles Peck into the mix. The two eventually recruited their sometime Re-Volts band mate Paul Oxborrow (“In the grand and time-honored tradition of band incest,” cracks Paul). To accompany the fuzzy vox, bouncy bass, and jangly guitars, the boys looked south from their Bay Area environs and pulled in the driving drum beats of Los Angeles sticks maven Rosie Gonce.

After wrapping up 2015 with their first ever visit to Japan as part of Fat Wreck Chords’ massive 25th Anniversary festival show, the band quickly decided to lay down some new tracks that they had been tinkering with. As Jack explains, “We recorded the Move Like a Ghost EP with our bud, and all-around ruler, Chris Dugan over in Oakland, Ca. at Jingletown. We wrote it because we all loved the idea of a 10-inch at 45 RPM. It sounds ruling and it kinda fits our whole, not wanting to play longer than 30 min vibe, too. I personally love short and sweet records.” The six songs on Move Like a Ghost are the perfect dose of toyGuitar’s unique blend of fuzzy garage rock, ‘70s proto-punk, and undeniably melodic pop.

More than just a continuation of their first album, Move Like a Ghost sees toyGuitarsuccinctly dial in all the sweet spots of their brand of referential and innovative rock ‘n’ roll. Dalrymple expands “I think collectively what we bring to the table and the way we are on stage together, is reflective of people that love being around each other. We trust and support one another, through the good and the bad.” Move Like a Ghost delivers all the charms that toyGuitar have become known for, with some pensive moments thrown in along the way. Dalrymple says, “There’s a song called ‘Swan’ on the record, which encapsulates the sentiment of loving who you perform with perfectly. There’s a song about my friend Heiko Schrepel (One Man Army) called ‘Turn It Around,’ which was super hard for me to write. After they were recorded, I found the whole experience to be very cathartic.”

More than an EP, Move Like a Ghost is a fully formed, perfectly executed six-song record. Together, the four members of toyGuitar collaborated to churn out the most blissed-out, beautiful rock ‘n’ roll record you’ll hear all year.

Revels (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/revelshtx

“Born out of the second wave of Houston’s punk scene, each member of Revels has spent the better part of the last 15 years paying their dues in various bands- because living in Hustletownteaches you that there’s no such thing as an overnight success. Seperately cutting their teeth in bands like Upsidedown Kellys, Talk Means Trouble, The Kubricks, No Inbetween, Pathetic Subsistance, and The Slowdown, these guys have come together ready to forge ahead with a classic, straightforward sound that doesn’t mess around. Their debut at SXSW was significant not only because it was their first live show as Revels but they represented their Bayou City home with a powerful performance filled with a pure, unadulterated punk that Austin won’t soon forget. Keep your eyes open for any opportunity to catch them live- you’ll be reminded of what old school punk should be.” -Alexis Kidd

Bad Samaritans (Houston, TX)

Prof. Fuzz 63 (Dallas, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/professorfuzz/

The Prof.Fuzz 63 is a Dallas-based lo-fi fuzzed-out garage-folk trio that’s been described by one listener as the “love child of Tom Waits and the Supersuckers.” Someone else said we sound like the Velvet Underground, “but not as cool as Lou Reed, because, who is?” Yet another critic said we sounded like “1991 Mudhoney with fuzzed out guitars and British Invasion organ.” We’re ok with those descriptions. We sing songs about food, sex, kittens, crustaceans, pandas, seduction & disappointment, minnie pearl, and nick cave. You know, the intersections where idyllic fantasies get broadsided by the under-insured 18-wheelers of real life running the red light.

The Hates (Houston, TX)
https://www.thehates.com/

The Hates has been called “Houston’s first and last punk band”, and with over thirty years of blood, sweat, and that familiar mohawk, those words may be more true than their author ever knew. From his very first live show in 1978, Christian Arnheiter has steered this legendary band through decades of disco, pop, new wave, hair bands, hip-hop, crossover country, and now the newest fad of tribute bands to keep punk rock alive.

In a time when many early eighties groups are getting back together to play reunion shows, the Hates have the distinction of being the oldest continuously performing unsigned punk band. And despite the love/hate relationship the local music scene has had with punk rock over the years, the Bayou City will always be their home.

Screech of Death (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Screech-of-Death/277191009099085

“..the righteously named Screech of Death, a relatively new “midtempo old-school punk” combination of two Texas punk warriors and one L.A. import. The Californian is Lisafer, Screech of Death’s lead singer and bassist, whose impressive rap sheet includes hitches with storied goth-punks 45 Grave, D.I., Nina Hagen and most recently Snapper, which also featured Rikk Agnew of the Adolescents.

Joining her is drummer Arthur Hayes, an original member of notorious cornholers the Hickoids as well as The Next and Mystery Date, and a longtime San Antonio scenester who used to book bands at legendary Alamo City dive Tacoland. Although it’s his first band playing guitar, J.R. Delgado’s local punk credentials span notable names like Doomsday Massacre, the Party Owls, Anarchitex and Sugar Shack; he also owned and operated landmark punk/alternative club the Axiom long before east downtown’s so-called “Warehouse District” was trendy.” – Houston Press

Friday 21 October 2016 - Omotai * Ex-Optimists * Bulls

Omotai (Houston, TX)
https://omotai.bandcamp.com/
Badass metal played here to highest standards. It feels like the band jammed a lot to make these songs and there’s great balance between the instruments and the different vocal styles. Most importantly: Omotai’s music kicks major ass just like good rock should! - Eternal Grunt

The Ex-Optimists (College Station, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/theexoptimists

“I’m honestly kicking myself now for not listening to this sooner. College Station band The Ex-Optimists have been on repeat in my headphones for a while now, drowning me in a turbulent squall of Sonic Youth guitars, driving ’90s indie-drone-rock melodies, and hazy, softspoken vocals, and I’m enjoying the hell out of it.

On “Nitemare City,” the guitars are watery and sharp-edged in equal measure, drifting around you like psychically-controlled knives that periodically dart in to gouge out a chunk of your flesh. In the meantime, frontman Kelly Minnis serenely murmurs and croons like he’s already lost in the swirling murk; that is, until the whole damn thing explodes in a ball of fury partway through before coalescing back into its more stable previous state. The closest thing I can come up with is Houston’s own Muhammad Ali, except that this quartet sounds like they’re fueled less by beer and more by green, leafy substances.

Then there’s B-side “February,” which dives sideways into nearly Dinosaur Jr., quick-stepping along through an insanely-catchy melody while the overfuzzed guitars set fire to the scenery. Occasionally feels like I’m listening to a rougher-edged Silversun Pickups — there’s definitely a hazy, shoegaze quality to it, beneath the out-and-out noise. “- Space City Rock
