Best Open-Mike Comedy Night Houston 2013
John Anderson Medical Benefit with The Hates * Screech of Death * Texas Massacre * The Cops
Doors at 8pm
Show at 9pm
The Hates has been called “Houston’s first and last punk band”, and with over thirty years of blood, sweat, and that familiar mohawk, those words may be more true than their author ever knew. From his very first live show in 1978, Christian Arnheiter has steered this legendary band through decades of disco, pop, new wave, hair bands, hip-hop, crossover country, and now the newest fad of tribute bands to keep punk rock alive.
In a time when many early eighties groups are getting back together to play reunion shows, the Hates have the distinction of being the oldest continuously performing unsigned punk band. And despite the love/hate relationship the local music scene has had with punk rock over the years, the Bayou City will always be their home.
Screech of Death (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Screech-of-Death/277191009099085
“..the righteously named Screech of Death, a relatively new “midtempo old-school punk” combination of two Texas punk warriors and one L.A. import. The Californian is Lisafer, Screech of Death’s lead singer and bassist, whose impressive rap sheet includes hitches with storied goth-punks 45 Grave, D.I., Nina Hagen and most recently Snapper, which also featured Rikk Agnew of the Adolescents.
Joining her is drummer Arthur Hayes, an original member of notorious cornholers the Hickoids as well as The Next and Mystery Date, and a longtime San Antonio scenester who used to book bands at legendary Alamo City dive Tacoland. Although it’s his first band playing guitar, J.R. Delgado’s local punk credentials span notable names like Doomsday Massacre, the Party Owls, Anarchitex and Sugar Shack; he also owned and operated landmark punk/alternative club the Axiom long before east downtown’s so-called “Warehouse District” was trendy.” – Houston Press

Generation Landslide (Houston, TX)

“ Trevor Wallace Houston Underground Music Examiner June 22, 2011 – Generation Landslide is Houston’s newest contestant in the race for the garage/psychedelic crown. Combining 1967 San Fransisco and Texas psych through a Strokes filter with a Dylanesque via Roky Erickson vocal style, the band got some much needed attention at this years Free Press Summer Fest. Had they existed (good Lord) 45 years ago, they would be sharing a stage with The 13th Floor Elevators and Red Krayola. But their self-description says it better than I can without hackeneyed comparisons: ” GENERATION:landslide! is a band whose voice comes from the heart and soul of Houston, TX. These people are songwriters…artists…audiophiles. They have a great passion for music and the common man. They are the champions of “garage”-rock and psychedelia; a band of seekers….” Do yourself a favor and check them out at their MySpace page. You will not be sorry. ” – Trevor Wallace – Houston Underground Music Examiner
“Generation Landslide: Their music is an orchestrated blend of inspiration that includes everything from R.E.M. to Patti Smith. The band’s collective influences has helped them develop a sound that is a calculated hodgepodge of rock and roll rhythm with an infusion of catchy pop melodies.” – Bridgette Zabak – The Houston Press-Rocks off aftermath
“Tomorrow Was Yesterday”. The 12 songs on this disc are a refreshing throwback, a collection of smart, back to basics psychedelic songs. You’ll find more genuine artistic feel and expression here and less over-produced glitz or contrived assembly-line material.” – Hollywood Steve Rangel – Houston Music News
The Escatones (Houston,TX)
https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Escatones/110675738999767
The Escatones are a 3 piece rock and roll band. Formed in the summer of 2010 in Galveston, TX, they play a blend of psychedelic surf garage punk country folk rock and roll. Connor Purcell (Lead Vocals/Guitar/Bass/Keys) meet JT Popiel (Bass/Guitar/Keys) during the winter of 2009 while jamming at a friend’s house. Connor had already had a band going known as the Jimson Jolly Vagrants. After playing a few shows under that name they decided to start fresh with a new name and new material.
The name comes from the word eschatology, which is the study of the end of times. Combine that with tones and you got yourself a 60′s sounding garage/surf name. Influenced by The Butthole Surfers, The Judy’s, 13th Floor Elevators, The Byrds, Dick Dale, The Ventures, The Stooges, The Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth, Prince, and just about everything else they try to not get stuck in one genre of music. 2011 was a busy year for them. They self released a spilt EP with fellow Houston rockers Darwin’s Finches called Owls in the Headlights of the Sulfur Digging Bulldozer. Released two full length live albums called Live from High Island and The Ghost of High Island, also a live album, on Houston label Homeskool Recordz. Relocating to Oklahoma for half the year after a disaster transport tour they were able to rock 55 shows
throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, and Louisana.
They are looking to end the last year on Earth with a bang. They are getting to release a 7″ under Artificial Head Records and are currently recording their first full length studio album. Oh and they are fat and hairy and when they come to your town you might see more of them then you want to.

Dead Roses (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Dead-Roses/232683603420051
“We’re not just a band…..we’re a fucking tragedy” – with these immortal words, they launched into their debut set on Valentine’s Day of 2004, and H-town’s infamous DEAD ROSES were born. Since then, they have played shows with notable acts such as the DEMOLITION DOLLRODS, GLASS CANDY, DEAD MOON, BOBBY CONN, LOST SOUNDS, LES GEORGES LENINGRAD, FATAL FLYING GUILLOTINES, MEAT PUPPETS, and DIRT BOMBS. Heart broken, sleep deprived, glam damage is this group’s forte. Their formidable line-up includes former members of the LEPERS, INTROVERTS, CULTURCIDE, PAIN TEENS, TRUTH DECAY, VULGARIANS, NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE, THE HAUNTING ALLURE OF ELKE PALLENBERG’S VOID, SWARM OF ANGELS, HIGH ALMOND CONTENT, NTX PISTOLS, DISCOMFORTRON, BALACLAVAS, FUTURE BLONDES, DIAMONDS AND PEARLS, AFTER PARTY, UNGARISCHE DEUTSCHE FREUNDSCHAFT, DOTS, MYSTERY FLAVOR, and BRIDE OF PINBOT to name a few. DEAD ROSES have recorded and re-recorded their epic first release nine times, but refuse to put it out until it absolutely meets their impossibly high standards of excellence. Other activities/interests include socializing with international superstars, needlepoint, speaking with fake foreign accents, experimenting with eyeliner, and getting kicked out of ALICE COOPER concerts.
