Morning Scales the Mountain (MStM) is an electric rock trio weaving guitar wail and omnidirectional percussion into high-density (and high-volume) improvised rock epics. Formed in Texas in 2017, the trio is composed of guitarist Tom Carter (Charalambides), Houston drummer and noisemaker John Kennedy, and Brazilian soundscapist Ramiro Matéria on guitar and bass.

Tom Carter’s electric guitar work weaves strands of melody, drone, fuzz, and charged silence into intricately detailed instant compositions. Best known for his work with iconoclastic acid-folk improvisers Charalambides (which he co-founded with Christina Carter in 1991 in Houston, TX), Tom Carter has focused on solo performances and recordings since 2012. Pitchfork selected his double LP Long Time Underground as the number-one experimental album of 2015.

Drummer and multi-instrumentalist John Kennedy emerged from the lysergic brew of Houston’s late-20th-century outsider music scene as a member of the mysterious electronic project Jesus Penis. Since then, he’s explored the many psychedelic byways of the Texas experimental scene, supplying percussion for free improvisers (the JDP Trio, with Paul Winstanley and David Dove) as well as zoned-out rockers (Dry Nod, Run Trip and Fall, and Rusted Shut). Kennedy’s electroacoustic project Cyclops Joint has been releasing recordings in various formats since 1991.

Guitarist and bassist Ramiro Matéria (aka André Ramiro) has deep roots in the noise, experimental and post-rock communities of Brazil. He is best known as co-founder of the expansive and cinematic Curitiban post-rock band ruído/mm. From 2006-2007, Ramiro operated as one-half of the experimental duo Índios Eletrônicos, a psychedelic stew of guitars and electronics pulling influences from all corners of the universe. Ramiro has performed with numerous rock bands, including Oaeoz, AlphaPsicotics and Iconoclastas.

The Velostacks (Houston, TX)
https://www.thevelostacks.com/

The story of The Velostacks is the journey of a pack rock n’ roll wolves hell bent on giving a voice to greasy motorheads and broken-hearted rockers everywhere. Pulled together by frontman and rhythm guitar player Curtis W. DeGidio, The Velostacks quickly left their mark on the Houston, Texas underground rock n’ roll scene, leading to the honor of being nominated for “Best Punk Band” in the 2014 Houston Press Music Awards… a major achievement in their freshman year. Rich “Rico Havoco” Crishock joined The Velostacks only hours before the first performance and has remained a constant along side Curtis since their first outing. Bass player Christian “The GFN” Best, holds down the thundering rhythm along side drummer Randy Miller. In 2017, starting with their kick-off show for the year, The Velostacks added Joe “Pete O’Fender” McSweeney to their hard hitting stage show.

The Velostacks have shared the stage with the likes of The Dictators, Lower Class Brats, The Casualties, Cheetah Chrome, Jukebox Romantics, Tex & The Horseheads, .45 Grave, Rick Agnew (The Adolescents), 30 Foot Fall, and many, many more.

The Velostacks have been influenced by everything rock n’ roll & dirty blues including Motorhead, Turbonegro, Mott the Hoople, Johnny Cash, Social Distortion, Robert Johnson, Led Belly, and Blind Lemon Jefferson.

2017 will see the release of The Velostacks debut single “Blood on the Carbs” on vinyl for the first time, previously only being available via digital download. In addition, The Velostacks will be releasing their first full length “Black Magic & Motor Oil” this same year.

Saturday 30 December 2017 - Pegstar Presents: Venomous Maximus (LP Release) * Eagle Claw * Pryeship

Venomous Maximus (Houston, TX)
https://venomousmaximus.bandcamp.com/

Venomous Maximus is a Heavy Metal band from Houston, TX. The sound combines intense, unabashed metal riffing that locks into heavy rock grooves featuring interjected dual leads and surprisingly darkened atmospheres. Add to it the distinctive voice of towering front man Gregg Higgins and his unorthodox, unsettling tone, and unholy sinister laugh.

Eagle Claw (Austin, TX)
https://eagleclaw.bandcamp.com/

Austin TX’s instruMETAL outfit EAGLE CLAW plays heavy, loud music. From the very beginning, vocals were never in the plan for this creatively destructive four piece. Taking up where other instrumental bands leave off, Eagle Claw carved out their own niche within the instrumental genre. Dynamic and engaging, but ultimately all things metal.

Formed in the fall of 2007, the band started gaining momentum when their Demo “Bastard Usurper” first infiltrated Austin’s music scene. That was then followed up by their first official release entitled “Poacher.” Recorded by Bryan Richie (Bassist, The Sword), it features 9 blistering tracks filled with tasteful riffs, clever time changes and fist pumping beats that set the tone for what Eagle Claw have become known for.

In 2012, the band released their much anticipated sophomore album, “Timing of the Void.” Featuring 8 monolithic tracks, the record’s title and overarching theme is based on “The Book of Five Rings”, a text on Kenjutsu and the martial arts, written by Japanese swordsman Miyamato Musashi, circa 1645. In a recent news item published on Eagle Claw, the Austin Chronicle wrote, “Like Musashi, the local quartet’s instrumentals are dually Zen and violent, and their timing and attack is martial. Not just a titular reference, the swordsman’s lessons are the basis for the music on Timing of the Void.”

Comprised of the dualistic soundscapes of guitarists, Matt Rade and Michael Gonzalez, the searing low end fuzz of bassist Luther Smalls, and the relentless pounding of Bart Butler’s drumming, the band is best known for their high energy live performances.

Dead Roses (Houston, TX)
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Dead-Roses/232683603420051

“We’re not just a band…..we’re a fucking tragedy” – with these immortal words, they launched into their debut set on Valentine’s Day of 2004, and H-town’s infamous DEAD ROSES were born. Since then, they have played shows with notable acts such as the DEMOLITION DOLLRODS, GLASS CANDY, DEAD MOON, BOBBY CONN, LOST SOUNDS, LES GEORGES LENINGRAD, FATAL FLYING GUILLOTINES, MEAT PUPPETS, and DIRT BOMBS. Heart broken, sleep deprived, glam damage is this group’s forte. Their formidable line-up includes former members of the LEPERS, INTROVERTS, CULTURCIDE, PAIN TEENS, TRUTH DECAY, VULGARIANS, NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE, THE HAUNTING ALLURE OF ELKE PALLENBERG’S VOID, SWARM OF ANGELS, HIGH ALMOND CONTENT, NTX PISTOLS, DISCOMFORTRON, BALACLAVAS, FUTURE BLONDES, DIAMONDS AND PEARLS, AFTER PARTY, UNGARISCHE DEUTSCHE FREUNDSCHAFT, DOTS, MYSTERY FLAVOR, and BRIDE OF PINBOT to name a few. DEAD ROSES have recorded and re-recorded their epic first release nine times, but refuse to put it out until it absolutely meets their impossibly high standards of excellence. Other activities/interests include socializing with international superstars, needlepoint, speaking with fake foreign accents, experimenting with eyeliner, and getting kicked out of ALICE COOPER concerts.

TKH - featuring members of Electric Frankenstein, Texas Terri & The Stiff Ones, Down & Dirties and The Wrong Ones
“Killer Hearts are a searing rock n roll band from Houston. - These guys are impressive to see live and they have the rock ‘n’ roll power ” -David Garrick, FPH

Jon Read called himself the Wiggins before you graduated beauty school. He only showboats onstage; he never rings his own bell. He stays ahead of the game for one simple reason, he works harder than everyone else.

This record took a long time coming. Each song here is a model of deformed rock and roll. Fucked-up white noise surf-rock and rusty nail salt-in-the-wound folk ballads. All delivered with the pill-drunk unsteadiness of Gene Vincent after the crash. Imagine the Monks gone electro, or a Jesus and Mary Chain rap album recorded on a fisher-price boombox.- TEX KERSCHEN, Indian Jewelry
